Retire Healthy

Rik Rodriguez
Retiring healthy can be more of a challenge these days. Mostly because we have cultivated non healthy habits for so many years at home and in our work environment. Fast food has become the normal substitute for what we used to call food. More than likely most fast food is devoid of much nutritional value ladened with chemicals, pesticides and hormones. One might take a look around and see the people that are actually surviving on these types of diets. Maybe they might notice that they are unhealthy and unhappy. A large percentage of people today are overweight sluggish and just plain tired all the time. I noticed this many years ago and decided that I didn't want to emulate the normal persons habits and become fat and lazy.

I also believe that these type of people may not be thinking properly. They do not exhibit common sense and the ability to make clear and concise decisions in their lives. Hence the evidence would be very clear to many of us by their continued actions of not noticing that they are over weight and unhappy. I believe that this type of behavior is a learned behavior and has been conditioned in us since we were very small. Especially those of us who were born after the invention of television and the Internet.

First I would try to become more aware of how you feel when you eat certain foods.Retiring healthy and staying healthy can be challenging today. You just do not go out and take a bunch of pills to stay healthy. Come on how many people have you seen taking a load of pills that are happy and healthy? Even if they are popping vitamins all day they will still fall short of remaining healthy and happy in their latter years. It seems like a good idea to become more aware of yourself and how you feel more than anything.

Experimenting with diets that restrict your intake of certain amount of foods has never worked for me. Obviously hasn't worked for millions of others either. I have always had to find foods that make me feel good and give me more energy. I pay attention to how the food makes me feel and how my body process the foods. For me I enjoy rice and beans with my meal. It satisfies me and I don't crave as much after I eat when I include it with fish, poultry or other meats. I really don't like salad unless its fresh from the garden. So for me I only eat a small amount of salad with my each meal.

The store bought type of salad mixes do not make me feel that great so I try to avoid them. Cooked veggies are OK sometimes,I also try to avoid people telling me what I should be eating because it healthier or what ever. My body is a better gauge of what I should be eating than any book or person. So remember its important to pay attention to how you feel after you eat.

I realize that some of you will take this the wrong way and think that you feel the best when you eat sugary caffeine filled drinks. Yes they can have a temporary effect on our energy level. Sure I like them on occasion also. Take a look at some of the people who like to live on coffee and soda pop. They don't seem healthy to me, they seem to be a bit scatter brained also. At least the ones that know. So tip number 1,find the foods that your body likes. That shouldn't be to hard. Next try to find an activity that you enjoy that burns calories. Become a little more active. No do not get sucked in to a Gym membership that you will never use. Take the time to do the activity, rather than make excuses for why you cannot make excuses for why you should be doing what you enjoy. Just these two little things in your live will help you think more clearly, lose weight and retire healthy. Retiring healthily is easy if you start taking care of yourself now.
