Retired Exercise

Clark Richards
Went to the pantry the other day.

When I got there, I could not say

Why I was there or what to get.

The thought had flown away like a jet.

Getting older you see, I'm sorry to say.

Thoughts come quick, then fly away.

Oh well, I'll turn to my coffee and read the news.

I'll need my glasses to see the views.

Oh dear, my glasses aren't here.

Must be upstairs - they're never near.

Up the stairs, fifth time this morn.

This old body is getting worn.

I'm at the top and now I've forgot.

Why I'm here - drat! - brainy rot!

O' yes, I know, I need my specks.

To see the print and read of wrecks.

Back downstairs, I'm settled here.

Coffee, paper, specks are near.

Read the paper, enjoy the time.

Sip my coffee - read a rhyme.

Ugh - bitter coffee, need to sweeten the cup.

Sugar's in the pantry, I need to get up.

Out to the kitchen, I'm on my way.

Open the door and then I say.

I was right here just a while back

To retrieve the sugar in the sack.

I'm getting older and often forget.

Happens to most - I guess - I bet.

Back to my chair - got all I need.

Glasses, coffee - it's time to read.

Settled in but my papers gone?

Left in the kitchen - darn that walks getting long.

Think I'll just stay here and rest.

I'll watch TV - a story of the west.

But wait - oh dear where's the remote.

Had it earlier and it's location now, I've failed to note.

Oh well - I guess I'll take a nap.

Getting tired quicker these days - my strength is sapped.
