Retired Webkinz

Cheeky Dog, Cheeky Cat, and Unicorn All Skyrocket in Price After Retirement

Lea Barton
Webkinz now includes three retired toys--Cheeky Dog, Cheeky Cat, and Unicorn. Webkinz are stuffed animals that come with tags that have a specific computer code. The computer code allows the owner of the stuffed animal to go to the Webkinz web page and create an account. The account includes a small computer animated version of the stuffed animal, to print a certificate of adoption, and to play in Webkinz World. In Webkinz World, the account owner can feed his or her pet, provide them with furniture and toys, earn Webkinz dollars by playing games and doing math, and much more.

Webkinz are sweeping the country. In 2006, Webkinz were found in a handful of speciality stores. Even florist shops carry them! By Christmas 2006 the Webkinz craze had gone nationwide, and in February 2007 various Webkinz were selling out in stores.

One reason why Webkinz-even the retired toys-are so popular has to do with the computer component. Children (and, let's face it, adults as well who love the toys) create online accounts in a safe, family-friendly environment. There is no chat, there is no concern about Internet predators. Just a wonderful, fun, and educational experience for Webkinz users. The system gives small children a chance to play math games, earn virtual money for the Webkinz, and to develop caring skills for their online pet.

Retired toys are a new phenomenon in the craze. These retired Webkinz will no longer be created and sold. Much like Beanie Babies, the makers of Webkinz have clearly designed these unique stuffed animals to become collectors items--retired Unicorn, Cheeky Cat, and Cheeky Dog are guaranteed to increase in value as a result of being retired. Prices on eBay for new and used retired animals skyrocked after Webkinz made the announcement.

While Webkinz retail for $12.99, on average, on eBay the Cheeky Dog lists for $200-a 1600% upmark. Retired Webkinz may help collectors to earn significant money for investing in the product not as a user of Webkinz, but as a savvy investor and seller. Love Puppy, a white stuffed dog with red and pink hearts, was issued in January 2007. By the end of February it was sold out nationwide (retail price $12.99) and was selling on eBay for $60. All future retired Webkinz may generate enormous increases in value for the products. While this is a fun, kid's toy, it's not kid games to consider the impact the retired animals has on the value and sale price of these products.
