Retooling Genetics

Jamie Hall
For so long humans have only dreamed of what it would be like to live forever, now with scientists and researchers exploring the genetic codes of mankind this no longer seems like a dream that's too far to reach. With the right equipment and the right minds working together, this may be possible in the near future. The only problem is how this would affect the earth and mankind itself, but sure enough the retooling of the human gene is sure to come.

People have always tried to find ways of living longer or even living forever. When the North American Continent was discovered, a man thought he had found the fountain of youth. A body of water that could magically make a person live for all eternity. Unfortunately, this is not possible, and although water is a vital resource for all life, it doesn't make someone live forever. Others have tried religion, and some more recently seem to think that eating better foods and exercising are the keys to long life. Of course eating better and exercising will increase your lifespan, this is definitely not going to make a human live for hundreds of years.

The real way to achieve this goal is through gene therapy. Scientists have discovered that some cancers are formed due to a certain D.N.A. strand that actually triggers the cancer to develop. Many diseases that people suffer from are in fact genetic. Even mental disorders such as anxiety and Schizophrenia are related to a certain gene also. In the near future, scientists will be able to eliminate certain diseases that are causing so many deaths today, and eventually turn off the gene that causes life forms to go through the stages of birth, maturity, old age, and death.

Gene therapy is in a beginning stage but is rapidly progressing due to so much research. Genetic engineering is a process where genes inside a human or animal body are altered to some degree. For example, there is a certain gene that triggers cancer inside of a person, if the scientists can learn how to substitute this gene or even turn it completely off, the cancer would no longer be able to develop inside of that particular person. It would work the same for most other diseases also, but the real objective is to manipulate the aging gene within a life form and possibly allow it to live a lot longer than the normal lifespan of the life form.
