Retro Gaming Back in Action

Here's a Link to the Past

Christopher Felli
Do you remember the good old days? Back when gaming was easier? The truth is, most people do. Gaming today just doesn't compare to what it used to be. Most adults don't even have the skills necessary to play today's games; they didn't grow up with such advanced technology! There are many people that just want to play the classics. For those people, here's a blast from the past.

There are several reasons why gaming on old platforms isn't possible today, and most of them are based in availability and price. The sad truth is, you can't buy a NES at just any store. They're becoming antiques, so you will probably have to bid in an auction. Also, the systems you'll find will be heavily used and overpriced. So in reality, purchasing the systems isn't worth it in the long run.

The solution? Emulators! Emulators are software programs that mimic old consoles. Today's modern computer's are capable of emulating several systems at a once. Emulators are available for all platforms (Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X) and they're usually free. They're not hard to find either. A quick Internet search (such as "genesis emulator") will yield several results, so you're not limited to one specific emulator if you dislike it.

Controllers are also available. Another quick search will display a number of results; Amazon alone has several. It's usually not that difficult to configure them with your system either. So if you want to duke it out with the Mario brothers the old-fashioned way, it's possible. You can find quality controllers for less than $20.

You may also be wondering how you're going to plug your Gameboy cartridge into your Mac. You don't need too! Digital game files (commonly known as 'ROM's') can be found with a quick search of the internet. The game files themselves are quite small, usually around 512 kilobytes (that's about a two-second download using high-speed internet.) For those who don't know what a 'kilobyte' is, just bare with me: it's extremely small.

In conclusion, you can easily emulate any classics on your PC or Macintosh. You can find games on the internet, and controllers are cheap and easy to find. It's a fairly simple process too. So get on the Internet and start your ROM collection today! You won't regret it!
