Retro Light Art Project: Burlap Headboard that Lights Up

Ann Siper
You can make some fun retro lights and light art into a headboard using simple materials from the local craft store, fabric store, and art store. This retro light art project turned headboard would look perfect in loft, vintage home décor setting, or even a shabby chic setting.

To Make this Retro Light Art Project Into a Flat Headboard You Will Need:

Burlap

Fabric paint

Stencils

Canvas Stretchers

String Lights

Nails

Picture Hanging Wire

To get started you will need 10 canvas stretchers from the local art store. You are making 2 rows of five canvases, so measure how wide your bed is and divide that by 5. Each piece can be as tall as you want, but they all need to be the same height.

Now, cut out pieces of rustic burlap fabric that are 6 inches wider and longer than your canvas stretched. Lay the burlap fabric face down on yoru work surface.

Top off with the wood stretcher. Now, pull the fabric back and around and wrap the wood and staple it onto place in the back. This will ok like a piece of canvas stretched to paint on.

Now, you get to paint! This is the time to add some fun details to your shabby chic light project. You can make this industrial style lighting for a loft, vintage retro lighting for a hip soft loft, or any pattern you wish.

Uses stencils, paintbrushes, and fabric paint to paint any designs, words, or patterns you want on the burlap.

Once any fabric paint dries you are ready to start installing the lights. I like to use inexpensive strings of Christmas lights for this. You can really use any kind of string light you wish though.

Staple the string of lights inside the wood frame, right behind the fabric. Try to keep them from touching if possible. You can also zig zag the strings of lights back and forth as well.

One the strings of lights are installed in you retro lights, then you are ready to hang them.

I like to simply hang each piece of burlap stretched canvas on the wall using picture hanging wires. Hang each pieces so that you make 2 rows of 5. This will give you fun height as well as a headboard that lights ups!

Kids will over this, but it looks cool enough for an adult bedroom as well.
