Retro System Review: Sega Genesis Retrogen Handheld Game

Portable Sega

Chris Ware
There are many retro gaming systems available right now. Some of these systems play only one kind of game, some play up to three kinds of games, and some are portable As many people are aware of China made products can be very cheap quality and most of these systems are made in China. Some of the systems work fine but some do not even work. This means you will want to learn how the system compare before you buy one. The Sega Genesis Retrogen Handheld Game is one example of these portable retro systems. If you want to know how the Sega Genesis Retrogen Handheld Game compares to other retro portable systems then you need to keep reading.

As you may have already guessed the Sega Genesis Retrogen Handheld Game plays Sega games and is also portable. The system has many of the usual portable problems. The game eats up batteries but not as bad as the NOMAD used to because of its small size. You can hook the machine up to the TV but if the internal rechargeable batteries die then you are out of luck.

The Retrogen has the same controller problem that most portables have. You can not use original controllers. They do not even give you wireless controllers to use but you have to use the awkwardly places ones on the machine.

Besides the controller problem there is the other popular portable problem of the machine being ugly and bulky when a game is inserted. One nice touch is that there are built in games. However the built in games are home brew games and not very good. Oddly enough though this game will let you play home brew games and even the European games if you can find them.

Like many retro games the Retrogen does not play all games. Unfortunately some of the best games can not be played on this such as Super Street Fighter II. The sound quality is bad unless using on the machine and then it can be bad or good depending on the game you play.

As for emulation the game does not do the best job of emulating games. On the TV some games have good quality sound while other games do not sound good at all. Even color and other issues are problematic on this machine.

This machine has its problems. The machine would maybe be all right except that there are other similar devices that are almost identical but made better such as the GenMobile. I would not recommend this machine.
