Return of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi is the final episode from the Star Wars Trilogy which later became a six-films saga with the prequels; the Return of the Jedi ends the Star Wars saga for good. Wikipedia calls this film a "space-opera" due to the intense psychological drama the film possesses; however, it's merely a sci-fi film, be it a really good one at that. The film was directed by Richard Marquand and written by George Lucas.

Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has according to "Yoda" become a Jedi. Likewise, Obi-Wan (played by Sir Alec Guinness) has also confirmed Luke's pedigree to Darth Vader, and tells him the story of how Darth (his father Anakin) was turned to "the dark side" by the emperor ("Palpatine"; Ian McDiarmind is probably the best actor in the whole film. He plays the role of the emperor with a zest! Fantastic acting!), he furthermore tells Luke that his father (Darth Vader) will most likely never turn back to the good side. Obi-Wan also confirms Luke's suspicions of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) being his half-sister.

The empire is building a second Death star even more powerful than the first one (seen in the original Star Wars episode). The rebel alliance (headed by Luke himself) is planning a final attack and destruction of both the Death star, and the emperor once in for all. The near by moon of Endor is where the alliance is gathering up for the final attack....

The best part of the film (and probably why it is dubbed a "space-opera") is the final confrontation between Darth Vader, the emperor, and Luke. Intense psychological drama, not to mention superb acting by all three of them.

The shield is removed from the Death star (a force shield if protecting the powerful Death star) making it vulnerable to attacks from the rebel spaceships; a take all finale by the rebels, not to mention fantastic special effects, probably best to date then. Darth turns to the good side, but is mortally wounded after grabbing the emperor and throwing him down a precipice when he (emperor) attempts to kill Luke. The death star is blown to smithereens by the rebels.

This is a cutting edge film in the sci-fi genre. And it's considered to be one of the best in terms of special effects. The film premiered in 1983; less than 20 years later the prequels would again break office box records like the first three films did.
