Returning to Work After a Break

Making a Smooth Transition Back into the Workplace

Jordan Smith
Many people have experienced a time in their life when they have had to take a leave of absence from work whether it is voluntary or involuntary. It may have been a family emergency, an addition or a death in family, or maybe you just needed to take some time off.

Returning to work after a break can be a stressful and exciting time. There is so much you would need to recondition yourself to do. If you are anything like me, you like to stay up late working on several different projects or simply relaxing and watching my favorite television programs. In my world there is always something to do.

Returning back to work would involve a lot of changes especially regarding your bedtime schedule. You will need to force yourself to go to bed at a reasonable time. If you like to go to bed late this will take some discipline. Decide what time you will go to bed and what time you will get up the next morning. You will need to be well rested even before you return back to work. Set your alarm clock if you have too and give yourself enough time so that you can make sure you are well groomed.

You will need to make sure your wardrobe is in order. Once you do that you may want to take your clothes out the night before. This will keep you from wasting time the next morning trying to decide what to wear.

If you have a family it would be wise to have a meeting with them before you return back to work. You will need to discuss how the changes in the schedule will affect the whole family. Discuss how the whole family would need to help around the house to accommodate the changes. It would be wise to delegate the chores at that time.

You may also want to schedule a meeting with your supervisor prior to returning to work. Your supervisor should be able to inform you of everything you have missed while you were out. If there have been any changes in the equipment as far as upgrades you would need to be trained, so you will be able to do your work effectively. After being out of work for a long period of time remember you will be transiting into a very different role. Do not get frustrated if procedures and policies have changed. Keep a positive outlook and remember the same way you learned and adjusted to the old policies and procedures you can do the same for the new ones. Go over and familiarize yourself with the new rules and regulations.

Make sure you arrive to work on time and be ready to start your week. You are fortunate to have a job to return too.
