Rev. Michael Pfleger, the Latest of Barack Obama's Scary Friends

Mark Whittington
Senator Barack Obama, candidate for President, seems to collect annoying and embarrassing friends like other people collect baseball cards. The latest is the Reverend Michael Pfleger, a Catholic priest, political activist, and spiritual advisor to Obama.

Pfleger, acting less like a Roman Catholic Father and more like the love child of Jeremiah Wright, gave a sermon at Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ recently. As with Wright, Pfleger's sermon had less to do with peace on Earth and good will toward men than with calling down hellfire and brimstone on one of Obama's enemies, in this case Hillary Clinton. As Pfelger strode around as if he had too much caffeine in his system, hollering at the top of his raspy voice, he said:

"When Hillary was crying, people said that was put on. I really don't believe it was put on. I really believe that she always thought, 'This is mine. I'm Bill (Clinton's) wife, I'm white, and this is mine. I just got to get up and step up to the plate -- and then out of nowhere came, 'Hey, I'm Barack Obama.' And she said, 'Damn! Where did you come from?! I'm white! I'm entitled! There's a black man stealing my show! She wasn't the only one crying -- there was a whole a lot of white people crying." The congregation went delirious with joy.

To paraphrase that character from Hunt for Red October, "Senator, you have another insane pastor?"

By the way, Hillary Clinton is a lot of things, but she is not a white supremacist. She feels entitled to the Presidency, not because she is a white girl, but because she is Hillary Rodham Clinton, child of destiny, and by heaven it is owed her. Otherwise all those decades of putting up with Bill's peccadilloes were all for naught.

Senator Barack Obama, naturally, was "shocked, shocked" that his friend of twenty years would say such things. Especially while it was being live streamed for later use on DVDs and YouTube. It was bad enough that Reverend Pfleger was insane, but he did so in public with the video cameras rolling. The Pfleger kerfuffle is the latest headache that has struck the Obama Campaign.

Along with Obama's tendency toward gaffes, his circle of friends is starting to become a pattern. We have been entertained by Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, and Bill Ayers. Michael Pfleger is just the latest in a line of weird, bizarre, and scary people who seem to have congregated around Senator Obama and his quest for the Presidency.

The really disquieting thing is that Summer has just started. Who else is going to pop out of the woodwork? Stay tuned.

JKP, its a sad point in American history when the political agenda of a preacher at a candidate's church is reason enough to not vote for him. Given the separation of church and state that we thankfully have in this country, a candidate's religious beliefs have nothing whatsoever to do with a person's qualifications for running this country. Jefferson was practicially atheist and Lincoln, for the all the religion in his writing, never followed a particular church. Plfeger and Wright are preachers, they are not Obama. Their beliefs bear no more relation to Obama's views than do the beliefs of the candidate's doctor or auto-mechanic. I'm not a fascist, just an exasperated Hamiltonian.

Richard Carriero sounds like a bit of a fascist with the 'letting them vote' remarks. Obama may well have selected a church just to get Jesus cred, but one must recognize that HE selected the church and that HE stuck with it for over two decades. Rev. Wright must have been saying plenty that Obama could appreciate. Religion aside, Rev. Wright is an anti-American, racist, divisive, hate monger, and Obama embraced him and his own brand of Jesus Juice. I guess it's not surprising though for a guy that will meet with our enemies without precondition gicing out enemies more cred and justification for their actions. I don't think Barack has gained a dime's worth of insight from all he's reading -. Karl Marx and The Communist Manifesto.

The scary thing is that they let uneducated busybody Christians who actually care about this nonsense vote for America's next president. Environment? Health Care? Nah, let's talk about who's got more Jesus cred! Absolutely moronic. Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe Obama only went to that church because he needed to demonstrate his 'faith' just so he could conform to America's all important "moral values." Maybe he's too busy reading a book or boning up on the issues to pay attention to what crackpots at the local house of God have to say. What a joke.

It is sad just anyone can write here. A large number of writers are just stupid and they write stupid stuff. This is so stupid. Pfleger is not Obamas friend, he is just another clown with a big mouth. The scary thing here is people like you who will just write anything. NO facts, or truth. I hope AC didn't pay you for this upfront.

So Obama has Wright and Pfleger. McCain has Hagee and Falwell. Or should I say, "had" Falwell. But Christians believe in the afterlife, so I guess you could say that Falwell's support is still extant. The only thing coming out of the woodwork are the true prejudices and discriminatory thinking patterns of a lot of Americans on both sides. And the mere thought of a priest being defrocked or having to suffer eternal damnation because of a political and social opinion begs this question: which priest or pastor in this country has not picked up the first stone in some private or public utterance against one or many in his congregation? Not one. Judgmentalism works both ways and is usually caustic on both sides. You don't agree with them? Fine. But condemning them to ostracism and damnation are opinions best left to those who know more about the situation than sound bites and pundit spin...

You need to really sit down and rethink exactly what "scary" means.

I truly believe there are more characters that will surface before November. I was just sick seeing the news clips on TV and I can say unequivocably that if my priest ever stood before us spouting that kind of speech, it would not take me 20 years to leave the church. You are judged by the company you keep and people are going to wake up and start judging Barack a lot more harshly, as they should. This event is just another in a long line of embarrassments. I can't believe a priest would stump for someone so clearly not Pro-Life either!

What non-believers must think if this man represents Christianity! He has definately lost his good witness...if he ever had one.
