Rev Up Your Search Engines

Making the Most of Your Online Searches

Ryan Samuels
All of us who are the least bit computer savvy have performed thousands of searches online. But are you getting the most out of your queries? The following tips may help you with your online search experience.

Less is Best
Search on fewer keywords. Trying "repair 1972 orange El Camino driver side mirror" may be too restrictive. Use "repair automobile mirror" to get more results. Of course, the trade off is that sometimes to find what you want you will have to weed through more.

Learn The Search Engine
Most search engines have options when performing the searches. Using the available operators and preferences may make the engine work more suitably for you. Using "El Camino" may be just the ticket to get that mirror fixed so you won't get one. Take the time to learn these options and use them. It will be time well spent.

Try Multiple Search Engines
You may have a favorite search engine but try several. They may generally return the same results but there will be differences. And sometimes the difference is dramatic. Keep in mind that a lot of sites provide search capabilities for the web that are "powered by" the same search engine. So watch out and don't spin your wheels (at least not until you get that mirror fixed) doing the exact same searches over and over.

Vary Your Search Keywords
This sounds contrary to "less is best" but try multiple searches with more and fewer keywords. Also try different keywords like "car" and "automobile". Account for differences in geographic region, education level, etc. when choosing keywords and you'll be "fixin' that mirror on your ride" in no time.

Use Library Techniques
When I first started doing searches online I was reminded of my time in school learning how to do research in the library. These same techniques apply to online searches. Use all the information at your disposal, such as author, topic, timeframe and snippets. For example, search for some of the lyrics if you don't know the title when trying to find out "who sang that song". You know- the one you were jamming to when you ripped the mirror off.

Be Persistent
In short, be persistent! Don't give up or assume you've seen it all after an attempt or two. The perfect result may be the one on your next try.

Hopefully you have found a useful tip or two here. If it turns out that you can't find what you are looking for then do some research online and offline. .When you have what you need, write it up and get it online so others may benefit. So, get the most out of the internet! Search wisely and have fun.
