Staying Within Your Current Genre
Changing your music doesn't mean you have to leave behind your old music taste completely. You can find new bands within the same genre. To do this, try utilizing a music network such as Grooveshark or iTunes. If you type in the bands that you like, you can then navigate to similar bands and try out their music. You can also find out what the inspiration was for the bands you like. Doing this can open the door to other bands, often from other decades but in the same genre.
Changing Decades
So speaking of changing the decade of the music you're listening to, this can be a great way to find new music. Do you like grunge? Try finding a list of bands from the decade when grunge was most popular. Classic rock? Find a list of the pioneers of this genre. Even if you don't want to stay in the same genre, just changing decades can open up an entire slew of new bands to listen to.
Music Blogs
If you're looking for current music, try a music blog. Hype machine is a great resource for free, new music. It's a constantly updated list of blogged music. So if you're bored with your current music, try something completely new. You never know what you're going to find. Even Urban Outfitters has a site section where they feature new and upcoming music artists. You may find something you like and the music is generally, not featured on the radio.
Local Artists
The internet is a great source of new music, but there's also plenty of new music waiting for you at local music shows. There should be plenty of bands who play different genres, so anyone can find music that speaks to them. If you get on Facebook and like local venues, some will send you invites to music events. As you find new local artists that you like, you can follow them on Facebook or buy their CD at a show. By doing this, you're supporting your local music scene and getting new, unique music for your own collection.
Changing your music and developing your own unique music taste is fun and exciting. There are many ways to do this and the internet is a great resource when searching for new music. However, don't limit yourself. Getting out and experiencing new types of music can open your eyes to new genres and even new instruments.
