Revelations by Melissa De La Cruz

After the enthusiasm I showed towards Masquerade, it's a bit difficult to discuss this latest installment. On the one hand, I really enjoyed it (like the others, I read it in one sitting) and am elated that some of my questions have finally been answered -like how Mimi and Jack are going to pull off marriage when they've been known as twins for so long. On the other hand, it wasn't as jaw droppingly surprising as the other installments. While the reveal of who was killing the Blue Bloods was someone I never would have suspected before, I saw it coming a mile away this time. That's not an insult to de la Cruz -if you know anything about Lucifer and what he's truly supposed to look like, you'll likely figure it out as well. If you don't, then you'll get quite a surprise.

Oliver and his The Empire Strikes Back quote were unexpected, albeit pleasant, and were a great insight into his character. Jack retains his status in my head as the flip flopping ass-hat of the month, though he does remind one of that age old question of fate vs. free will. Bliss, bless her little pea pickin' heart, is as clueless as ever. Mimi is one bitch I wouldn't want to come across in a dark alley. For her part, Schuylar finally makes some good decisions and she may or may not be the key to defeating the evil Silver Bloods once and for all. She also may or may not have a half sibling out there.

Unless I've misunderstood the text, I find it increasingly hard to believe that there are only 400 Blue Bloods. Apparently, now not only do they fill up New York society (enough to have their own ball) and the fashion industry, but now they're worldwide. But, if I can suspend my disbelief long enough to accept that there are fallen angels who became vampires who are increasingly reincarnated as prominent people, then I guess I can accept that more such vampires are going to pop up when the occasion warrants it.

Ultimately, I think of Revelations the way I do about The Godfather Part III. Unlike a lot of people, I actually really liked The Godfather Part III. It's just hard to appreciate something for what it is when it's inevitably going to be compared to the awesomeness that came before. But whereas Godfather III was the end, this is only the beginning. The end of Revelations sets us up for what is sure to be an exciting battle between the Blue Bloods and Silver Bloods, Lucifer and his child (?) vs. the other fallen angels who've left him. Personally, I can't wait, so head to your local bookstore or online bookseller and catch yourself up on this great new series before The Van Alen Legacy is released.
