The Reverend Jerry Falwell has died at the age of 73.

Around 10:45 this morning, the Reverend was found unconscious and unresponsive, after he failed to appear for a meeting. He was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg where he was pronounced dead.

Falwell was a television evangelist and founder of the Moral Majority. He became a major player within the religious right during the 1980's. The Moral Majority was credited with getting millions of conservative voters registered and helping to get Ronald Reagan elected. Republicans also gained Senate control in 1980.

Falwell started a fundamentalist church in 1955, which grew into a Christian empire that included "The Old Time Gospel Hour" which is carried on TV stations across the country. He also built Christian schools and homes for unwed mothers. He founded Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971. It later became Liberty University, which has an enrollment of 7,700 students. He was serving as President of Liberty University at the time of his death.

He is survived by his wife Macel, and three children, Jerry, Jonathan, and Jeannie.

Good riddance to him.. I will never understand in my life how Christians can say such cruel and mean things about people who are gay. Just amazes how self-centered some are. Excellent coverage,

Do you think he blames his death on gays?
