Review of 2 Popular Ways to Grow Black Hair

Cathy Howse

Cathy is the spokesperson and creator of the Ultra Black Hair Care Line. Her Book, Ultra Black Hair Growth 2000, is a popular read for many women who are looking to grow their hair long. I purchased this book a while back. And I must say it is great. Without giving away the contents of the entire book, I will say it's all about moisture moisture, moisture. Some of the things Cathy recommends are washing you hair throughout the week, plenty of conditioning and daily moisturizing with moisturizers that include water in their ingredients. She's not a believer in mineral oil or the idea that oil moisturizes the hair.

One of the biggest and controversial ideas in Cathy's book is the idea that you do not need to trim your ends to grow your hair. Cathy says trimming the ends has little to nothing at all to do with hair growth. In fact, Cathy believes that it is the habit of getting ends trimmed on a routine basis that causes black women not to see hair growth.

Well.... good luck washing your hair throughout the week. Most of us go to the hairdresser about every two weeks. So if you're planning on washing your hair throughout the week, you may have to learn to do your hair yourself. That could be a lot of work. Also, it may take a lot of time to find a good water-based moisturizer that works with your hair. A lot of water based moisturizers are creamy. And creamy moisturizers can often weigh the hair down. It's possible that the better quality creamy moisturizers found in salons will do a better job of not weighing down the hair. Cathy sells her own water-based product as well.

Can Cathy's methods grow black hair?

Well Cathy's Hair is all the way down her back. I've seen some pictures of some people who have used the book, and their hair is really long too. I've tried her methods, and I did notice a difference in my hair. But a lot of her methods are all over the net, on places like the long hair care forum and are pretty much common sense. So of course Cathy can grow black hair long. It's just that too many women believe that oil moisturizes their hair, and they don't think about other options. And too many women do not feel it's necessary to wash their hair often.

Going Natural

Many people go natural so that their hair can be free of chemicals and therefore not be as dry as relaxed hair. The idea is that if the hair is not so dry and chemically processed it should finally be able to grow past one's ears. People go natural for other reasons than just to grow their hair long. But many do it for this reason alone. I was natural for about five years.

Going natural can grow your hair, but a lot of the manipulation it takes to put natural hair into styles such as twisting, coiling, and etc, make it easier for natural hair to break. It's true that you can moisturize natural hair a lot without worrying about it getting weighed down. And you can wash natural hair throughout the week without having to worry about blow drying it and wrapping it into a perfect style.

Can going natural grow black hair?

Perhaps, but going natural is apart of a bigger plan. Relaxed hair is dryer than natural hair period. And dry hair breaks. Moisturized hair does not break. Relaxing hair breaks down the protein bonds in hair. And hair that is not that strong breaks more easily. But with more moisture and more protein, it should be possible to grow relaxed just as successfully as natural hair.

I really have concluded that's it's mostly about moisture.

And should you trim? Well, I do think it's good to find a hairdresser that is flexible with trims. Many hairdressers are not. Find a hairdresser who talks about growing your hair rather than when you are making your next appointment. These types of hairdressers are out there if you are willing to look hard enough.
