Review of the 2006 Toyota Matrix

A Sporty and Functional Hatchback

Rich Heltzel
The 2006 Toyota Matrix is a small, sporty wagon that offers high functionality. Its sleek styling has typically attracted younger buyers, but all ages have been attracted to it. The Toyota Matrix was introduced in 2003 with three different trims levels starting at $15,110. Both the base and XR model was equipped with the four cylinder 1.8 liter motor. While peppy and more than enough power for driving around town and decent acceleration on the highway, it was no match for the XRS model's power plant with an extra 50 horsepower. A common complaint, and something I have noticed, is the lack of low end torque on hills and late shifting with the automatic transmission.

The exterior can be quite plain with the base model, but step up to the XR or XRS and offers subtle body differences including a body kit, different wheel covers and badges. All three trims levels offered eight fun colors, with stone or gray colored interior. As the matrix was marketed as a sportier vehicle, the interior stepped up to the image. Compared to the Toyota Corolla of the same year, it is much more flashy and stylish. Chrome accent rings around the gauges and front bucket seats compliment the Matrix.

As stated before, the Matrix is about functionality. The rear hatch offers large cargo space with fifteen cubic feet and the rear seats fold flat to allow even more room for sports gear or groceries. You are even capable of plugging in your laptop with the 12v auxiliary power outlet in the front dash. The front seat folds flat with a non slip surface to work on documents when on the go.

Two wheel drive models offer a high mpg rating of 28/34, although I have never achieved over 32 on the highway. AWD versions of the Matrix offer a slightly less rating with 26/31. In snowy conditions, traction can be questionable with front wheel drive and snow tires are recommended. AWD offers better traction and would be recommended for such climates. Our family has two sets of wheels and tires that we change between throughout seasons.

The 2006 Toyota Matrix is a great vehicle for buyers of all ages looking for a functional and sporty hatch back with great gas mileage, safety and reliability. Four years after buying new, we still show no problems and have kept up only basic maintenance. I would strongly recommend this vehicle over similarity equipped hatchbacks in its class.
