Review: 2007 Ford Escape

Eric Lind
In the world of large SUV's and trucks, Ford has all its bases covered. Their trucks have dominated the large truck segment for years, yet they haven't forgotten how to build a great "small" SUV either. The Ford Escape is Fords answer to the growing demand of SUV's that still give the driver the commanding feel, yet hurts them a lot less at the pump.

The quality of the interior has dramatically improved in the escape since its introduction, much like the rest of Ford's line up. The plastic has a much more "expensive" feel to it, and holds up great under wear and tear. It's a good thing because its everywhere, even gracing the steering wheel. Although this may not sound that great, the plastic holds up incredibly well, even after forty thousand miles of use. The cabin stays cheery (all that plastic is bright!) and spacious.

The Escape comes with either the base four cylinder or the optional V6. The four cylinder provides adequate power, but if you like a car that will move, opt for the 200 hp V6. Either way you get a nicely balanced, fuel efficient motor that's smooth and quiet.

The Escape does get above average marks for handling. Borrowing a chassis from Mazda means a surprisingly composed car, with a great ride. In a way that's very 'mazdaesque" the Ford manages to not beat the driver over rough roads while providing crisp, firm handling. This is one partnership that paid off for Ford.

The latest refreshing of the Escape lent it a more modern, appealing look. It's not overly brash, and blends in easily with a crowd. You won't get noticed in this car, but at the same time few people will talk it down. It has a great stance that's more car like than SUV.

Overall the Ford Escape provides great bang for the buck in the small SUV segment. Of course, if you're looking at moving from a full sized SUV into something smaller, it will be quite a change. Small SUVs don't have the massive towing capacity and luggage room, but you get a much more fuel efficient, fun to drive and in many ways more practical vehicle.
