For around town, the Accent averages around 20 miles per gallon. The shifting is geared low making for quick get up and go from a standstill. When turning onto busy roads, this is nice.
Highway mileage isn't so great, with only an average of about 26 miles per gallon. What is an advantage with the gearing in city driving becomes a disadvantage on the highway. With posted speeds of 65 miles per hour, the Accent runs in the higher rpm ranges, although nowhere near the red zones. This tends to produce a high pitched whine at highway speeds and explains the not so great highway mileage.
The 100,000 mile warranty covers the power train only. We had issues with a faulty coil ignition recently; to cover it under warranty they would have charged us to hook it up to the scan tool (about $85) even though we knew exactly what it was; plus an hour's labor. Only the part would have been covered under the warranty. The part itself ran about $100 and took 15 minutes to change.
Other issues include problems with seatbelt latches. We have several, luckily in the back, that take repeated insertions to get latched into place. This is at times a frustrating and when raining, very wet annoyance.
According to the dealership, the blue book value as of December 2009 for this year and model is around $8500.
Overall, the car has performed sufficiently; most mileage is acquired with city driving conditions so the highway issues and higher rpm's on the motor do not make a large issue. The car was designed to be a low end vehicle. Despite the above issues, the car has never left us stranded, has made interstate trips, day trips, and the typical chauffeur the kids to practice runs without any major mishaps.
The Accent would certainly make a good first car as well as suitable transportation for anyone who needed a reasonable 4-door economy vehicle.

Post a CommentYou gas mileage is nothing like mine. I have an '09 SE hatchback, and get much better mileage than you do. I think I get around 28 in town for sure, certainly not "20" mpg. Highway I'm less sure about, but well over 30 mpg. Something is wrong with this picture.
