Crossover vehicles can offer the best functionality of two worlds. With an auto vehicle built on a car platform yet offering features of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV); crossovers can offer lower miles per gallon (MPG) than a traditional SUV while highlighting some of SUV's best features like higher seating or all wheel drive capability. Though they are not designed for anything beyond very light off-road use; they seem to be a popular choice among mothers who do not want a traditional mommy mobile and consumers who want a more gas efficient vehicle. This article reviews the top five crossover vehicles in 2011 by five different categories.

The Best Small Crossover

Subaru Forester: This crossover is expertly designed in engineering and ingenuity. Although small with only five passenger capability; the fold down backseats allow offers versatile storing capabilities. Subaru enhanced the engine performance with the new 2.5 liter Boxer engine. In a statement by the Cambridge PR Group "This alteration improves fuel efficiency to 21 mpg/city and 27 mpg/highway in both manual and automatic models without losing any of the Forester's 170 hp". Subaru also has several features upgrade. A new mid-level trim package, the 2.5X Touring, includes a rearview camera, dual-zone climate control and silver roof rails. One of the best features of the forester; the AWD which makes the Forester an excellent all weather vehicle.

The Best Luxury Crossover

The sleekly designed 2011 Lincoln MKX is the new luxury crossover that has best-in-class power as well as fuel efficiency with EPA certification at 21 m.p.g.. In a review by Car Connection; the 2011 MKX has extensive changes, including a new powertrain, a touched-up exterior, all-new instrument panel, greatly upgraded materials, new seats, upgraded insulation from noise and vibration, and standout new interior tech features.

Best Hybrid Crossover

The Eco minded Ford Escape Hybrid is the perennial favorite among the green consumers and made the top list on The Daily Green's Best Fuel Efficient Crossovers. The 2011 model will the last Escape for Ford which will be replaced by European Kuga Crossover in 2012. There is no definite answer if Kuga will have the hybrid option, so for those who want the best Hybrid crossover; 2011 may be the last chance to score one.

The Most Unusual Crossover

Although most crossovers have the SUV style body, "Honda has taken the wraps off of a new crossover with unusual styling that has the automotive press scratching its head," US News. Crosstour borrows Accord's most powerful engine and fortifies its suspension to support its additional 300 pounds of curb weight (500 with AWD). Many car reviewers didn't favor the unusual design, but if you are seeking something different; the Crosstour is your choice.

The Best Weekend Crossover

The Mini Cooper is introducing four passenger crossover in 2011. In a report by Edmonds Inside Line, The (Mini's) Crossover Concept's asymmetrical four-door body is totally unique, with a considerably higher beltline and taller doors. In September of this year, the Mini Crossover will be officially introduced as the "Countryman". The power for the MINI Countryman will be provided by a range of five powerplants - three gas units and two diesels according to Jared Gall for Car and Driver.
