WALL STREET captured America's fascination and obsession with being rich. It also examined the repercussions of the illegal pursuit of wealth. With a mind-grabbing production and mostly grade A acting, WALL STREET provides outstanding entertainment that is still relevant today.
The actors include the aforementioned Michael Douglas, Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Hal Holbrook, Sean Young and Darryl Hannah. The females are clearly just window dressing in WALL STREET. It's all about the power and ambition of the men. The exquisitely decorated luxurious sets draw us in and make us want to stay among the "beautiful people".
As the plot of WALL STREET thrusts stockbroker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) into the illegal, yet profitable, world of insider trading, he matches wits with corporate raider Gordon Gekko (Douglas). The impressionable Fox becomes torn between Gekko who has taken him under his wing and the stern warnings from his real father, a Union airline worker, who is played by Martin Sheen. We witness Bud twisting the rules and overstepping the law in his pursuit of the almighty dollar. As WALL STREET unfolds, we see the inevitable crash and burn of the young stockbroker.
WALL STREET made a large impression on many folks in the 1980's. I know several people who memorized Gekko's "Greed is good" speech from beginning to end. They thought it was great - and true. As we endure our current economic crisis, it's really interesting to go back and watch WALL STREET and reflect on all that was the 80's.
