If you have had cold sores you know you're stuck with getting them forever. Unfortunately, this Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 infection causes fluid-filled blisters that can start small and grow into epic proportions in a short amount of time. Even when we don't see this virus outwardly, we know it's lying dormant in various nerves and will eventually surface again at the most inopportune times. For me, those times have been on a date, right before a job interview, or just before attending a social event. Situations causing nervousness and stress seem to bring out the best (actually, worst) in this virus. Interestingly enough, the fumes from cleaning solutions, especially those containing bleach, brings on cold sores for me as well. The fumes must cause enough irritation to the area to trigger a sore.
I've gotten cold sores since I was in my late teens. Applying a cold compress to the affected area helps a little. A while back I decided to try Abreva. Abreva is a non-prescription drug and costs about $15 at your local Wal-mart store. Abreva comes in a .07 ounce tube. As soon as I feel that tell-tale tingling and warmth on my lip, I apply a thin layer of Abreva to the affected area. Used as directed, I have been able to get rid of my cold sores before they become more than a tiny red spot or at worst, a tiny blister. I would recommend this product to anyone who suffers with cold sores. I keep it with me everywhere I go.
