Review: Adam Lambert on American Idol Finale

Adam Lambert Outperforms Kris Allen

Christina Majaski
When it was decided that the winner of American Idol Season 8 would be chosen between Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, it seemed pretty clear to most American Idol viewers that Kris Allen didn't stand a chance. The two competitors couldn't be more opposite than Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, and the American Idol Finale was exactly what many viewers expected.

First Song: Mad World

Adam Lambert began one of his three acts with an encore performance of Mad World. Unfortunately, even with the special fog effects and long, black Dracula trench coat this performance was nowhere as stunning as the first time Adam performed it. To me, it seemed even a little boring. Kris Allen's best performance of the night, and probably season, was Ain't No Sunshine and clearly won him the first round. If anything, it gave viewers hope that maybe the American Idol Finale wouldn't be a complete blowout.

Second Song: A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke

The second song Adam Lambert performed in American Idol's Finale night was the R&B classic, A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke, and here is when I became re-convinced that the competition would result in an embarrassing blowout. Adam Lambert clearly blew it out of the water showing that he could not only "sing his face off" as Randy Jackson put it, but that he could also sing any genre that he so chose to sing. After Simon Cowell declared Kris Allen the winner of the first round, Adam Lambert's performance of A Change is Gonna Come, undoubtedly reminded me that Kris Allen was out of his league completely. For once I agreed with the nonsensical Paula Abdul in that Adam Lambert would be iconic.

Third Song: No Boundaries

It is completely unfair that the American Idol finalists had to sing a song as awful as No Boundaries which was co written by Kara DioGuardi. Adam Lambert performed No Boundaries as well as any human being will ever be able to perform it which I suppose is the true sign of a performer. It takes an undeniable and obvious talent to make a crappy song sound halfway decent. Unfortunately, hard core Kris Allen fans everywhere will scream for a do over, because Kara DioGuardi's song was admittedly too high for him to even attempt and just ended up being the end of a sad train wreck.

Good Luck Kris Allen

The good thing about American Idol though, is that whether you win or lose, you still usually end up with some kind of music deal. The only thing second place loses is the title of American Idol champ, but other than that, second place has just as much to look forward to as first. As each of the judges wished Kris Allen the best of luck, you can't feel too bad for him. He's still the winner of something.

Thanks for the recap! It's always interesting to get someone else's take on things.

I haven't been watching the season but I have managed to catch "Idol Tonight" so I have a fair idea of the singing talent this year. I think Adam will be a star regardless so it would be nice to see Kris win.
