Review: Adam Lambert's Performance of 'Ring of Fire' on March 17 Show

Ambrosia Jefferson
For the second week of country, we had a Salute to the Grand Ole Opry. Adam Lambert chose the immortal Johnny Cash for his musician and the song was Ring of Fire. And this writer thinks Adam Lambert went down in a blaze of fire. He positively butchered this country classic.

I can understand wanting to put your own twist on a song. But the sitar odd Middle Eastern feel to this version of the song was too much. Simon had it right when he said, "There are probably a lot of people throwing their TV set out the window right now." if it weren't for my need for that TV mine would be two floors down now.

One word comes to mind when thinking about Adam Lambert's performance: Emo. Now I as a general rule have nothing against the Emo set, but this was an overload. The over all vocal quality was acceptable. I have liked the sound of Adam Lambert's voice in the past, and he can sing. No one can take that away from him. But this week he made the wrong choice in the styling of his song.

I realize country music is not for everyone. And I realize this was not a great genre for Adam, but he could have gone with a lot of other artists that would have suited his style better. If you're not a county person don't go with a country classic like Johnny Cash. The man in black would be very upset about the justice that was done to his song tonight. When a wonderfully polite man like Randy Travis is struck silent by your performance maybe you should think about that. All of that said, I don't think this will be Adam Lambert's week to go home. Those who like the Emo thing and who can remember his previous performances will vote for him. But he was out preformed several times over tonight.

I quite honestly believe that this was by far the most brilliant performances of the entire season. It was the most original song performed and with amazing vocals to boot. Now, I am and always will be a huge fan of Johnny Cash. I was becoming a fan of Lambert when country week came. I was horrified when this came up as his choice for country song. Ring of Fire is my favorite Johnny Cash song and was very tempted to fast forward through the entire performance. But I gave it a chance and fell completely in love. This is the song, the performance and the artistry that captivated me and brought me into being an Adam Lambert fan. This was beyond anything that had ever been done on the Idol stage and it worked so well. After the performance, I was just stunned to hear the comments of the judges being so down on him and his interpretation. The song Adam chose may have been country, but the performance most certainly was not. But it was breathtaking nonetheless.

    Best performance on ever

I am a Johnny Cash fan and now an Adam Lambert fan. I thought this version of the song was captivating and brillant. It's not like the original and it's wasn't suppose to be. Sometimes taking an old song and changing it is a disaster but this was not the case. He made it his own, which is what the american idol judges always say they want and frankly when I watch it's what I want. I want to see new CREATIVE singers and artists not the same old same old. I love his version. I close my eyes and listen and feel like I'm in a dream. You know the music is good when it makes you feel something and this song gave me goosebumps "in a good way" I could sit on my back porch with a drink after a long day and melt away with this song. Thanks adam. And yanno I think Mr.Cash would appreciate him as an artist. Cash was different, VERY different for his time and so is Adam.

Come on people this is not Karaoke. If he made it sound like Johnny's version he would have got raked over the coals. My view is that he is the most talented singer since the beginning of AI. Time will prove this to be true. As for Ring of Fire, absolutely brilliant. The more I listened to it the more I appreciated it.

Simply the BEST song on Idol so far this season!!! I've NEVER downloaded an Idol song from itunes but I bought this one today!!! It was an awsome twist on a great Cash song, it's amazing how the same words can sound sooo different. Go Adam!!!

Brilliant...Adam is the only one on AI who's slightly out of the mainstream and delivers a noteworthy performance, in my opinion. I downloaded his "Ring of Fire" performance to my MP3 player this morning. Johnny Cash did some covers of more contemporary groups - no doubt he'd appreciate different takes on his songs also, especially if the artist rocked it w/ tremendous emotion & vocals, as Adam did.

My wife and I had to rewind it and listen again it was so good. And it was better the second listen. Absolutely spectacular - amazing vocals, intriguing rendition, went from soft and seductive to powerful, excellent showmanship. I don't think I've seen it's equal on AI.
