Review of the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends (NES)

S.R.
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends is a plat former action game on the Nintendo Entertainment System released in 1991 and developed by Radical Entertainment. This is a weird franchise to make a game about, but the cartoon is quite good for it's time. So does it hold up to it's name? Let's find out.

Story : Bullwinkle has inherited a mansion but it's stolen or something. I don't really know and I guess it doesn't matter. Beat the bad guys, save the day, party with your flying squirrel. I'm sure there's more story to it but I have no idea what it is.

Graphics : Wow, the graphics in this game are horrible! I'm not talking about the sprites or animation though, there's tons of graphic glitches and bugs! Large amounts of text flash on top of the screen, looking like binary code. This is not something you expect in a finished game! Very shocking that this made it to the shelves. Not only that but Rocky and Bullwinkle don't really look that great and sport only a few frames of animation. The backgrounds also look quite bad.

Sound : Very lazy effort on the game developer's part here. There's only one song in this game and it loops forever. It will drive you crazy if you don't mute the game, which I highly suggest. Sound effects are also quite crappy, just random bleep and boops and nothing satisfying at all.

Game play : The controls in this game are garbage. Very loose and you'll find making any kind of jumps successfully extremely hard. Nothing responds well or is fluid at all. No matter who you're playing as, the control isn't good. Even if the controls were good, that wouldn't save you form the insane difficulty of the game. If you get passed level one of this game, you may be able to tolerate the rest. Other than that I can pretty much promise that nobody will stick through this game. Picking up items is difficult, jumping is difficult, even moving is difficult because you have to wait a moment to pick up speed. Everything in this game just causes a headache. What a waste of a great license.

Re playability : There is no replay value here. Perhaps if you're an absolutely hardcore Rocky and Bullwinkle fan, but other than that you won't even make it through this game once. Not even the first level.

Overall : 1/10. A stain on the Rocky and Bullwinkle franchise. Avoid at all costs.
