Review of Aldi Seasons Choice Diced Potatoes with Onions

Brad Kamer

This past summer I received a tip from a neighbor on a breakfast potato dish sold at the local Aldi. This dish known as Seasons Choice Diced potatoes and onions is sold in the refrigerated section next to the sour cream and other dairy products. The product is contained in a plastic bag with an expiration date ranging anywhere from one to two weeks depending upon when you buy it.

Every weekend our family has at least one good size breakfast involving eggs, toast, and a few sides that usually include sausage and occasionally breakfast potatoes. These ready to cook potatoes seemed like a decent idea to speed things up for my Saturday morning breakfast ensemble.

Preparation

The first step to cooking the potatoes was to heat up a skillet and add a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, the potatoes with diced onions were added in the skillet. The potatoes are then covered for about ten minutes. After ten minutes the potatoes were flipped over and cooked another ten minutes to ensure both sides will adequately brown. As long as the heat is medium to low, these potatoes are pretty easy to prepare and require little attention to allow the cook to work on other items such as the eggs , toast and sausage. The best part of the preparation is not having to endure the peeling, dicing, and long cook times associated with hash browns made from scratch.

Taste

The aroma produced by the diced potatoes was heavenly as was the taste. The potatoes were not too mushy and flavor was pretty solid with an occasional bite of onion. I did add a little salt and pepper in addition to some hot sauce as that is a matter of personal preference. The cooking directions by the manufacturer suggested less cooking time than the ten minutes on each side, but I really like a crispy potato and that was the result.

Price

The cost of a bag of these potatoes set me back a meek $1.59. This bag is large enough to provide enough potatoes for family of five to six. At this low price, it is worth purchasing a few more bags if one is confident these will get cooked prior to the expiration date. I have not experimented with freezing this product after purchase since they are sold as a refrigerated product.

Overall Opinion

The Seasons Choice diced potatoes with onions is probably one of the Aldi stores top products for my family. These are the perfect complement to a morning of scrambled eggs. I would also highly recommend them as a side dish to a lunch or dinner of burgers or brats. In addition to superb taste, the low price and low prep time make this dish a strong buy.
