Review of Alexia Sweet Potato Julienne Fries: Too Many Additives?
Might Not Be Right for Chemically Sensitive?
I put the fries on a cookie sheet and stuck them in the oven. It was THEN that I read the label. As the bag refers to Alexia "all natural" potatoes, breads and appetizers, I thought that the ingredients would be sweet potatoes, some kind of oil and salt. This is where Alexia sweet potatoes and I started to part ways.
The listed ingredients for Alexia Sweet Potato Julienne Fries are the following: Sweet potatoes, canola oil and/or sunflower oil and/or safflower oil, rice flour, tapioca starch, cornstarch, dextrin, salt, dextrose, xanthan gum, leavening (disodium dihydrogen pyrophospate, sodium bicarbonate), colored with turmeric and oleoresin paprika. Additives a plenty if you ask me! I don't do additives unless there is absolutely no other way for me to go. Most people would probably not be bothered by this.
I broke 2 of my grocery shopping rules: 1) is to read ALL labels on ALL food. 2) is don't buy anything that has ingredients that I cannot pronounce. People like me that are chemically sensitive look at the above ingredients and think ADDITIVES!?
We ate the Alexia Sweet Potato Julienne Fries. They were actually good. They looked great on the plate! The flavor was what you would expect from a sweet potato. Most people would probably not mind the additives. For me, there will be no second bite at the Alexis sweet potato fries. I guess I can make sweet potato fries from scratch.
I am disappointed that the Alexis Sweet Potato Julienne Fries were so full of extra ingredients. I love their products, but I don't like additives. Additives for the chemically sensitive is a game changer. I wish food companies would go for health rather than shelf time. Like Heinz's ketchup going from corn syrup back to sugar. For me, Heinz's got a return customer for doing that.
In the end, I am shocked to say that I probably would not buy them again. The additives are the main reason why. Alexis Sweet Potato Julienne Fries are not for me or my thinking of what "natural" is.
