My boyfriend had been wanting to eat there for a while, having heard great things about the spaghetti and meatball platters. So, we decided to make the short drive to Altony's from Fargo one day last week.
Upon arriving, we were a bit confused as to whether we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait for a waiter to show us to a table. It is a small restaurant, packed with diners at the time, so we quickly decided that it is a seat-yourself type of joint. Fortunately, there was a small table for two open, which we promptly claimed.
The Menu
The waitress was quick to greet us and bring menus over. We each ordered a glass of water as we looked over the menu, which has items from pasta alfredo to sandwiches. I was in the mood for a half-order of ravioli, and Dan went with the full plate of spaghetti.
The entrees came with bread, salad and ice cream. The bread came first; then the salads were brought to our table. They were good, although we were still hungry for the main course. This is a good thing. I really enjoyed the ravioli, which was packed with cheese and smothered in a delicious meat sauce. Dan's spaghetti - well, let's just say there was enough to feed two to three people. And the meatballs were huge!
I finished my half plate of pasta feeling perfectly satisfied, but Dan could barely make it through half his plate of spaghetti and meatballs. While we boxed up his leftovers, the waitress brought over a dish of soft serve ice cream for each of us. It was the perfect finish to a scrumptious meal.
The Prices
We paid our tab at the table. Altogether - including two meals, tax and a tip for our waitress - we paid only $20. These days, you cannot beat that price anywhere, except maybe at a fast food restaurant.
Would I recommend Altony's Italian Restaurant? Definitely. It was worth the trip we made from Fargo to Dilworth that evening, although you might want to call for their hours before visiting; their kitchen closes early in the evenings and they are not open at all on Sundays.
