Review: American Idol April 21 Disco Performances

7 Idols Are Left

Renee Bagley
There are only 7 Idols left, and today, two will be sent home. This week the contestants were supposed to perform songs from the disco era. Tonight, 7 Idols took the stage where they appeared to truly give all that they had to give. Fan favorites like Allison Iraheta and Adam Lambert seemed to give the most entertainment value, and the best vocals of the night.

Lil Rounds has been someone that I have been really rooting for this season. It's people like her that really got me in to watching Season 8, before that, I was not an avid American Idol watcher. Lil sang "I'm Every Woman" tonight and I think she might be one of the two Idols facing double-elimination tomorrow. She can no longer please the judges in her performances, and I think that viewers might send her home due to that. The judges opinions ultimately seem to affect fan votes. I think Lil is trying much too hard, to please the judges, that she is over-thinking her performances. She is also choosing songs that are keeping the judges down on her, which usually signals that the Idol will soon go home. I hope Lil finds her originality - that is the only thing that could save her. She is still a great singer, but she needs to chose the right song every time. Will she get another chance?

Kris Allen played guitar while singing an original version of "She Works Hard For The Money". The Donna Summers hit had a new arrangement, and he really did make this song his own. Simon said his performance was "fantastic, original, and well thought out". Simon also noted that it was "not karaoke", a compliment no doubt. Randy Jackson said that his performance was "amazing". I thought it was original, but his style is a bit too John Mayerish for my tastes. His performances are no longer entertaining to me, because I like music a bit harder than what he can deliver.

Next up was Danny Gokey, who sang "September", which was originally an Earth, Wind, & Fire song. The glasses were back on and he was all over the place. Kara said his performance was "pitch always right on, another solid performance." Paula said that Gokey had one of the sexiest voices, ever.. Simon said that he didn't feel any star power from Gokey. And I agreed...

Allison Iraheta performed on the edge on a moving staircase. She sang "Hot Stuff" with her voice strong, and in full-throttle gear. Her voice still amazes me..it is so strong and rock! She is really going to have a great career in the near future. You can just tell. Simon called her performance "a brilliant arrangement". The judges agreed that Iraheta was one of the best singers in the competition, which we all knew. Still it was nice of Simon to admit it.

Adam Lambert sang an original version of "If I Can't Have You", from the film Saturday Night Fever. Paula was fixated on Lambert with tears in her eyes. It was a little weird the way she looked at him, but hey maybe that is what has drawn so many fans towards him. Kara said that he was "brilliant" and that "every week he upped it". Paula deemed him "fascinating". Simon said "he would've put $10,000 on that he was going to do a Donna Summers song". Simon also called Lambert's vocals "immaculate". Lambert brought the audience to their feet.

Matt Giraud performed "Staying Alive" a Bee Gees hit. His voice was good and his performance was entertaining. I love the way Giraud can always hit the really high notes. Judge Randy Jackson said that he "didn't love the song choice" but admitted that Giraud can "really sing". Simon said he "did not like" his performance and that "he needs to get himself out of Idol Land and into the Real World". That was just weird to say, and I nearly always can understand where Simon is coming from. I think those comments could have done Lil wonders, because she truly is the Idol currently confused on song choices.

Anoop Desai was up last singing "Love Don't Come Easy". Simon called his performance "mediocre at best" and also said that it was "a horrible version" of the song. Simon then told Anoop that his performance was "his worst performance so far". I didn't agree with that because he has had worse performances. Anoop was getting better at his song selections at one time, but tonight's performance was dull. Is Anoop going home tomorrow? I think he is..

Wednesday, April 22, we will see 2 more Idols sent home, leaving only 5 Idol hopefuls. Soon we will see the competition narrowed down to the top 3 Idols and before long a "winner" will be crowned.

Don't forget to vote, every Tuesday, on your favorite American Idol, after each new broadcast. You can also check out the American Idol results show every Wednesday.
