Review of American Idol Season 8 Show

American Idol Season 8 Premiere: More Bad than Good

On this episode of the new American Idol , there seemed to be a lot more bad than good as far as the quality of the singers . One overly excited singer was so bad and persistent about getting his time in the limelight that he had to be escorted out to the audition room by security. Another young man had a strange singing voice that resembled a hurting sheep. Randy instantly had to hide his laughter with a piece of paper in front of his face during this audition.

But there were a few stand outs. An oil drill worker who was rough around the edges turned out to have a very pleasant, "whimsical" voice under that hard exterior. He got rave reviews from the judge and a ticket to Hollywood. One girl amazingly got through to Hollywood with just 1 vote... from Randy or Paula? Nope. For once Simon was the only person on the panel to vote an applicant in.

New American Idol Judge: Kara DioGuardi

American Idol also has a new judge, Kara DioGuardi, who is a singer songwriter who I don't think is very well know. I surely have never heard of her. She and Paula make a very weird pair. On at least two occasions reviewers could find them pretending to kiss each other or participating in some other strange display. Of course, Kara is not a fan of Simon, and isn't afraid to tell him so.

When a bikini clad applicant came on stage and got instant rave reviews from both Simon and Randy (no surprise there), Kara felt the need to challenge her to an impromptu sing off. She wanted to show Simon and Randy that the girl wasn't that great a singer; they were blinded by her two-piece bikini. She unfortunately didn't do that great a job proving her point!

Overall Review of American Idol

All in all, I thought that this first episode of American Idol was pretty boring and uneventful. The producers seemed to be stretching it by focusing on the bikini girl and the crazed guitar-playing guy who refused to leave. Way too reality TV. Hopefully they'll stick to their previous format of focusing on the real life stories of the applicants in future episodes.
