Review: American Idol Top 10 Elimination

K.M.
On Wednesday night Michael sang "Aint Too Proud to Beg" by none other than The Temptations. The challenge of Motown week for all ten contestants was to sing a classic song flawlessly. Unfortunately, Michael struggled to hit the big notes. He hit them, but nearly busts a vein in the process.

I like Michael. He's a tough guy who went from the world's most dangerous job (working on an oil rig), to Hollywood. What a change for him and during the next few weeks we watched Michael get more and more comfortable on stage. We heard his vocals improve and bonded with him on a personal level.

Elimination this week was a somewhat easy guess, although I was stupefied to see that Matt Giraud had been one of the bottom 3. I fully expected to see Megan Joy up on stage, but alas, the public has spoken. After 45 minutes of pure agony waiting to hear who the next victim would be, I breathed a sigh of relief as they announced Matt Giraud as "safe."

Michael on the other hand didn't appear surprised by his elimination. He was a perfect gentleman and accepted the consequence without as much as a frown. Forced to sing the song once again and quite obviously not looking forward to it, he did so in the hopes of being "saved" by one of the judges. Michael belted out the tune one last time with that famous toothy grin pasted on his chubby face. Simon, quite curtly announced that he was sorry, but it was time for him to go home. Simon, does he have to be so cold? Really, there are nicer ways in which to handle these vulnerable contestants without shattering their already bruised egos.

As I mentioned earlier, I was stunned when Megan was not in the bottom three. I felt that Megan deserved to be in Michael's place. She was horrible on Wednesday night, not just bad, but horrible. Perhaps her votes came from those who hold "looks" above talent? We may never know the answer. Although, one thing is certain, Megan's days are numbered on Idol as the competition gears up for next week.

I don't think this will be the end of the road for our big lug. We may just catch wind of a record deal one day. I think he's good enough for an album, but one which doesn't test his vocals too much. Goodbye Michael. We all hope to hear you on the radio one day soon and really hope you can find a music career and leave the oil rig work to someone who can't sing...
