Review: You Can Get Arrested for That--2 Guys, 25 Dumb Laws, 1 Absurd American Crime Spree
By Rich Smith, 243 Pages, Paperback, $13.95
While walking through our local library one day, I spotted this gem of a book. I am easily captured by a great title, and when I saw this one--how could I not grab it and see what it was about?
I was not disappointed; the book is about exactly what you'd imagine it to be about... Well, sort of.
Rich Smith, and his best friend "Batemen" are from England, and one day he discovers a book of laws in our own country that are not only outdated, but for the most part, utterly ridiculous! So he and his friend decide to take a Summer holiday to the States, to see just how many of the absurd laws they can break!
With (seemingly) limitless credit cards, several rental cars, and more alcohol than I thought fit, they set off on a crazy trip across the good old USofA.
Smith must've kept quite a journal of his journey, because his descriptions of sceneries and persons is impeccable. He writes with an Englishman's wit, especially when comparing things in our country to his, yet he keeps an accurate account of every place they visit--from small towns to the large cities.
You Can Get Arrested For That even informs the reader of random snippets of history as they read!
I had a great time reading about all the laws they attempted to break (they fail at some, such as carrying a bathtub across the village green in Longmeadow, MA!), and the two Englishmen's journey and interactions as they went along.
If you enjoy reading books that tell real accounts of crazy, and/or oft times silly trips, full of humor and fast reading, this book is one I'm sure you'll enjoy as much as I did!
