Review: The Art Hotel Munich; Discount Hotel Near Munich's Hauptbahnhof

Joyce Carole
Ask anyone who knows me well and he or she will tell you that I am not the type of traveler who enjoys staying on the cheap. I adore hotels that have terry cloth robes, spa services and phones in the bathroom. That being said, two months after my third son was born; we made the decision to take a family trip to Munich, Germany. The only requirement, when we chose our hotel, was that it needed to be located near the train station (Hauptbahnhof) and had to be cheap. We got all that and more at the Art Hotel Munich. Here is my review of the Art Hotel Munich, and the surprising fun we had while staying at this discount Munich hotel.

The Art Hotel Munich - Ideal Location near Munich's Hauptbahnhof
The section of Munich near the main train station or Hauptbahnhof is not the prettiest area of Munich but it has its definite advantages. Those who have been to the German city of Munich can attest that there are many incredible sites just a train ride away. Munich itself is a fun and lively city and the Art Hotel is a short walk from the Marienplatz and the famous Hofbrauhaus. If you want to see the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, the Romantic Road, the Olympic Stadium and Dachau, you are going to need to take the train. The Art Hotel and its location just a short five-minute walk from Munich's main train station makes it the ideal place to stay.

The Art Hotel - What You Need to Know

First, the amenities at the Art Hotel are sparse. While there is a restaurant, it only served breakfast. The good news is that the price of breakfast was included in the price of the room. There was a daily breakfast buffet with both hot entrees and an assortment of cereals and pastries. The restaurant was clean and bright and the service was friendly and quick. The rooms are small but clean and when we stayed, we paid slightly under $100 a night. The one important thing to note, especially for planning a summer trip, the Art Hotel has no air conditioning. You can open the windows, but expect it to be noisy at night. When we first arrived at the Art Hotel, it was July and the temperature hovered around 90 degrees, fortunately, it cooled off the next day and the temperature remained in the low eighties for the remainder of our trip.

While I really enjoy staying at luxury resorts, a discount hotel lends a feeling of adventure to your vacation. It is also much better for your wallet. I would stay at the Art Hotel Munich again in a heartbeat. The hotel was clean, the location was ideal and my family had a wonderful time. What more could you want?

If all you need is to sleep, the luxury is unnecessary. I do insist on a decent breakfast, however, which you got here. Air conditioning sounds like a luxury, but we once got a cheap hotel without it it Athens in the summer...big mistake. We moved upscale a bit after one sleepless night.

When I lived in Europe, we often stayed at hostels or the equivalent of B&B's. Definitely cheap, some better than others :) Cheers!

I've to Munich a couple of times, but I've seen very little of it as I was there for work. Maybe I should visit again next time I'm in Europe.

We had a similar experience while staying at a discount hotel near a popular attraction. We could have stayed somewhere a bit closer but we spent so much time at the attraction that we didn't need more than a hearty breakfast and decent accommodations. We got all that. I'd try the Art Hotel in a heartbeat!
