Review: As Seen on Tv Turbo Snake Hair Clog Removal Tool

Does the Turbo Snake Clean Out Drains as Well as it Does in the Infomercial?

Julie Lind
If you have a slow running drain due to hair clogs, I recommend the As Seen on TV product called Turbo Snake. Turbo Snake is a drain snake that cleans out hair clogs without dangerous chemicals or expensive plumber service calls.

When I first saw the As Seen on TV infomercial for the Turbo Snake, I didn't think my husband would want to try it. He's a handy guy, so I couldn't picture him using something this gimmicky. Luckily, someone at his work had just recommended the Turbo Snake, so my husband was willing to give it a try.

The Turbo Snake package came with two snakes. The Tub & Shower Snake has a big, flat head and is designed to clean out shower and tub drains. The smaller Sink Snake has a cylinder head to be used for bathroom sink drains.

Both 27-inch Turbo Snakes have a flexible plastic-covered wire with a Velcro-like tip. The Velcro tip grabs and holds onto hair clogs. Because the Turbo Snake is narrow, you don't have to remove the drain stopper to get to the hair clog, which makes it very easy to use.

To use the Turbo Snake, send the head of the Turbo Snake under the drain stopper and down the drain. You may have to twist it a bit to get it to go all the way down the drain. Twist and move the Turbo Snake up and down the drain so it can grab onto the hair clog. When you have reached the hair clog, slowly pull the Turbo Snake out of the drain.

The next direction should say, "Be prepared to lose your lunch when you see the gross mass of hair that is removed from the drain." Instead, it just instructs you to remove hair and debris from the Turbo Snake's head. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you how to get the gunk off the heads.

Removing the gunk from the Turbo Snake's head is not an easy process. It is very tempting to throw the Snake away to avoid all contact with the yucky mass of goo. But since I'm too cheap, I went ahead and pulled the grotesque gunk off the head with my fingers so I could re-use it the next time I have a slow running drain.

I don't think the head of the Turbo Snake will ever go back to being totally clean. But it is reusable if you can stand removing the majority of the hair and gunk off the head of the Turbo Snake.

After using the Turbo Snake on our shower drain, our drain ran noticeably faster. Gone are the days of standing in 3-inches of water while showering.

Both my husband and I were very impressed that the Turbo Snake worked so quickly and effectively. Even though the Turbo Snake is gross to clean, I find it to be a much better alternative than toxic chemicals or expensive plumber bills.

My husband is relieved that he will no longer have to remove the trap under the sink to clean out the drains.

We plan on using Turbo Snakes on a frequent basis to help keep our drains free from hair clogs in the future.

I purchased my As Seen on TV Turbo Snake at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $9.99.

The velcro tips are not well glued on. Both came off with the first use. It's a nice idea,as the velcro really can grab hold of hair etc., but the product itself is very poorly made. Avoid.

The first time I tried to use it the head came off in my bathtub drain. Now I will likely have the head of this thing collecting hair in my tub drain till I break down and spend a small fortune on a plumber to get the head out. Do yourself a favor, don’t buy this product. Given the expense involved when the head breaks off, that should NEVER happen.

Fortunately I only wasted $2.99 (I got my 'snake' at Ollie's) because I could only use it once! In addition to hair now I also have the velcro tip of the 'sink snake' clogging my drain!! You guessed it - the tip came off! Not exactly 'long lasting'!!

It is amazing what can get down the sink and past the sink stopper. This seems like a budget friendly way to help unclog sinks.

Good review! I love your personal experience with it, and from my experience using a generic (ie, cheap) version, yes - the gunk that comes up is truly disturbing.
