Review of Aunt Millie's Country Buttermilk Bread

As I get older I have opted for healthier replacements in my diet with the purpose of consuming less sugar, fat, and carbohydrates. The decision to cut back on all the bad ingredients in food can test our abilities to stay on course, thus creating an occasional need for a reward every few days in the diet. One of my rewards is treating myself to a sandwich made with buttermilk bread as opposed to the high fiber low carbohydrate whole wheat blends that tend to be on the dry side. I recently picked up a loaf of Aunt Millie's sliced country buttermilk bread at the local Meijer. The package of bread was on sale and looked very appealing for forthcoming lunch and breakfast meals. My original decision to select the Aunt Millie's brand was based on a positive experience I had with Aunt Millie's hamburger buns.

Nutrition and Ingredients

Each slice of bread is eighty five calories with a gram of fat and a gram of fiber. Though this bread does contain wheat and barley flour, the largest ingredient is enriched bleached flour. I kind of guessed that the "processed" flour would be number one in this baked good as it was listed as the number one ingredient and the bread appeared almost too perfect. The package contains approximately twenty slices of bread and was perfectly moist upon opening the package.

Taste

The serving of bread is considered one slice and is very generous in size. As I prepared my lunch, I was surprised how much larger the sandwich appeared than the typical whole wheat bread I am accustomed to. I was pleasantly satisfied with the Aunt Millie's "big sandwich" capability.

The bread tasted very buttery and was not dry at all. I enjoyed this bread as I topped it with some fresh turkey and Monterey pepper jack cheeses and a few other condiments. The sandwich was very fullfilling and I felt less inclined to supplement each bite with the usual bag of chips or fruit. The dense rich flavor and heartiness of each slice made this bread a prime candidate for breakfast toast and jam.

Price

I purchased this bread at the sale price of $1.49 though the regular price typically charges about $2.49. The price of this bread is still well below the three dollar price that is charged by the Brownberry brands which I also enjoy. At the sale price, I would have been best served to purchase a few extra loaves to freeze for family use.

Overall Opinion

Those that love white buttermilk sliced bread should pick up a loaf of Aunt Millie's. This bread is every bit as good as the competition and is rated a very strong buy.
