Review of Aveda Hair Detoxifier

Lisa Ross
The name of this product only sounds like something you'd use after, say, getting slimed on Nickelodeon. Until I tried it, I didn't know I was a product I couldn't live without.

This product removes build-up from your hair. I didn't know I was in need of such a product until moving to a town with hard water. My hair became tangle-y and dry. My stylist suggested using this product to get some of mineral buildup off my hair. It worked well.

The Hair Detoxifier comes in a brown bottle. It comes in an 8.5 fluid ounce size and costs nine dollars. This is the same price that I paid for it five years ago. Aveda products are only sold in Aveda salons or on their web site at aveda.com. Aveda doesn't test on animals. The company is based out of Minneapolis, but has salons worldwide.

It has a medicinal, though not chemical, smell. Aveda's products are known for their spa-like herbal fragrances. This product, while it does its job, is not likely one whose fragrance will make you swoon like some of Aveda's products. It smells like Vicks-44. Like Aveda's other products, it contains organically grown herbs. Hair Detoxifier contains aloe and sage leaf extracts.

After putting it on your wet hair, let it sit for a few minutes to do its job. Once you rinse it out of your hair, you will definitely need to use a conditioner, as this product does not detangle or condition. Its job is to get the gunk off your hair before you condition.

I use it twice a week and follow up with a deep moisturizing conditioner. This is the only salon hair product I still purchase, as I have replaced all my others with cheaper products. This is worth the price. And since I am only using it occasionally, it lasts a long time.

Those with fine hair find that clarifying (using this type of treatment) is especially important because fine hair is easily weighed down by product build-up. My best hair days are on the days I clarify. Build-up on hair can also dry out the hair by not allowing conditioners to be absorbed. So clarifying is an important part of conditioning your hair.

The Hair Detoxifier also removes chlorine from hair. They recommend that swimmers use it daily. The aloe clarifies without damaging the hair.

Aveda has a satisfaction guarantee on their products, so the Hair Detoxifier can be returned for a refund with a receipt.
