Review of AVG Free Antivirus Software Program

Pat Bartels
AVG is one of the best antivirus software programs available. The different components of the software include: Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Link Scanner, E-mail Scanner, Resident Shield, and an Update Manager. You can also purchase a component that will provide identity theft.

The Anti-Virus software free edition will allow you to schedule your scans whenever you want. Which means you can schedule scans at times when you aren't using your computer. You can also choose what you want to scan. Usually I just choose to scan the entire computer. You can also choose to scan your network computers. I usually prefer to put a copy of AVG on each computer. I give the Anti-Virus section 5 stars

The email scanner will work with your Microsoft Office email program. I have also used it on Outlook. It will automatically scan your incoming emails for any viruses. It works extremely well. This section also gets 5 stars.

The Link Scanner protects you when you are surfing the internet. It will also check links on searches that you do to make sure that your computer is kept safe from any viruses while you are online. The link scanner only works with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla. I've got to knock a point off because there are other web browsers that it should work with. I can only give it 4 stars on this one.

The Resident Shields scan everything that is going on in your computer. It scans files when you open them or save them. It scans any disks or removable media that you add to your machine to make sure that no viruses can be loaded on your computer. You can, if you want, exclude files from being scanned. This part of the software also gets 5 stars.

There is an Update Manager that takes care of keeping your virus information up to date. It's important with any Anti-Virus software that you have the most up to day information about viruses. This part of the software gets 5 stars.

AVG puts an icon in your system tray. It will notify you when it is scanning, updating, or if there is a problem. You can check the logs occasionally to see what type of activity has been going on. You will want to be sure to check this periodically to make sure that the software has been scanning properly.

AVG also has products that you can purchase. These products include things like identity theft protection, phishing protection, an enhanced firewall, and expert technical help. These products are reasonably priced. With the free product you don't get technical help, but I have never had an occasion that I would have required their help services.

I have used this software for many years. They are continually improving the software and I find this to be as good as anything on the market that you can pay for. One of the greatest features of this program is that, for individual use, the program is absolutely free. The overall rating I would give on this product is 4.8 stars.

    Good info on these programs.

Great review Pat! I, too, have found AVG to be one of the best.

I used free AVG for years, then upgraded to the paid version. Never had a problem with either. Now, my internet service includes a security suite - if it did not, I would have stayed with AVG. There are still some good free things out there !

I used Norton for years, but switched to AVG a while back. It seems fine, but my computer is slow now...not sure if it's a result of the AVG or another problem.

I think the thing that's hard to tell with antivirus software is which viruses it blocks, and how quickly it adapts to new ones. That's hard to know without a lot of extensive tests, though.

I use Norton and noscript. No script is free and has updates all the time

We use AVG and I agree - it's the best :) Cheers (p.s. Pat-did you sell your house yet?)

Mike this product has continually been improving over the years. I find that it works as well as Mcafee and I have used both of these programs without any problems. I use Mcafee on one computer because my bank gave me a years free subscription. Put will switch that computer to AVG when the Mcafee subscription runs out.

I would have liked to hear more about your resons for giving each section 5 stars. You only mentioned why you didn't give one section 5 stars. For example, I have used several email AV progarms that are so slow I quit using them for this purpose. I currently use McAfee and am fairly satisfied with it overall, but it does cost money. It would be nice to have some comparison with McAfee or Norton/Symantec, for example.
