Review: Baby's First Library by SoftPlay

E. Hignutt
For a book lover, the first book's for your baby can be hard to decide on. Especially with an infant's penchant for chewing, tasting and drooling. SoftPlay has come up with a diverse first pack of baby books.

From the soft book about dogs, with the adorable rhymes, to cats galore, these two books are great for carrying around. Baby can drool, chomp and chew to his heart's content on these fabric pages without harm. The covers offer soft and fuzzy tails, puffed out animals and bright colors to further interest the developing infant. My teenage son sits and reads these two little books repeatedly to his younger brother. Even my ten year old has not problem sitting and reading these out loud to her baby sibling. This creates a great bonding experience for the older child to feel important to their captive audience. These little books have helped defeat the tinge of jealousy that can occur when having to suddenly share mommy's attention. Of course soft pages also mean no rips, tears, bends, or paper cuts.

Also in this package of five books, is a bath book. Read about ducky on the vinyl pages and take duck for a test swim in the tub. No worry about damage. Baby can chomp on this one while you're busy scrubbing hair and folds. The only drawback, as with any vinyl book, is that the edges can be a bit rough on tender gums; you might want to minimize chomping when not under immediate supervision.

And check out the Touch and Feel Book. Your baby will enjoy the textures. And of course, so will his mouth. Since this a board book with fabric textures (like fuzzy elephant ears and shiny cat stripes) you may want to limit teething time. And for the glamour minded, there's a Sparkling Picture book.

All five books come in a cool zippered carrying case. The case is much larger than the books, allowing for you to toss in a few other favorite toys.

Each book comes on a plastic ring that's large enough to attach to various baby objects. We hooked a book to the infant car seat to dangle in front of my little one. He spent many car rides reaching up and swatting or grabbing at the attached book. The books will also hook to many of the rings attached to various entertainment centers, diaper bags, strollers, high chairs, etc.

According to SoftPlay, these books are educator approved and "provide children with an early start toward learning and reading." While I'm not sure the content will necessarily help your baby read sooner, the make up of the books will gaurantee hours of teething time and enjoyment.
