When I first heard about Banana Nut Cheerios, I naturally thought that the nut flavor would be walnut. In my opinion, walnuts go with bananas. I was surprised to see that General Mills uses almonds in this cereal instead of walnuts. I also noticed that Banana Nut Cheerios were more expensive than the varieties I usually buy. In fact, they cost quite a bit more, with 10.9 ounces for $4.25. Still, I bought a box.
A few days after making this purchase, I poured some cereal into a bowl and then tasted a dry piece. I was somewhat surprised by the taste. I didn't find the banana flavor to be particularly strong, and I didn't taste even a hint of almond. What I got was a slight banana taste accompanied by the toasty flavor of Cheerios. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I'd been expecting.
Now that I knew what dry Banana Nut Cheerios tasted like, it was time to add a little milk. I'm glad I didn't use much, because I thought this cereal was much better dry. The milk took away some of the banana taste. I finished the bowl and pondered what to do the next time.
A few days later, I tried again. This time, after tasting a few dry pieces, I mixed in some Multigrain Cheerios, added some milk, and took a bite. It was pretty good. In fact, I'm planning to do it again, but with a different ratio. Instead of mixing them equally, I'll use more of the multigrain kind in a 2:1 ratio.
I'm glad I tried Banana Nut Cheerios. They are a good addition to the product line, although I think they're best when combined with the multigrain variety. They're probably also good with the original kind, but I haven't tried that. Since they're the most expensive variety of Cheerios I've found, I won't likely buy another box unless it's on sale.
