I have one heck of an appetite and even I can't manage the giant sandwiches at Barry's New York Style Deli in the North Market district of downtown Columbus, Ohio. They are most widely recognized for their corned beef sandwiches, which are famous around Columbus and are unlike anything we have in town anywhere else. If you are looking for a light lunch at the North Market, your best bet is to split one of these guys or one of their hero sandwiches. They have deals where you can get a sandwich, giant pickle, and salad and this is quite enough for two people in some cases. Their normal sandwiches, which are almost too big to eat, are broken into two sizes, the regular (enough for two people) and the "human" size, which is perfect for a large filling lunch. In case you wondered, anyone I know who goes over there for lunch always orders the "human" sized sandwiches-they're a good meal and don't make such a huge mess. In addition to their famous sandwiches (another one of my favorites is the "Jersey" which has a very generous helping of turkey on rye) they also have different several different salads to choose from (egg, tuna, and chicken) and they have some of the best cheesecake in the whole of the North Market.
Aside from their popular lunch fare, Barry's New York Style Deli is one of the best places in Columbus, Ohio to find kosher meats and other products sold by the pound. They are not really that expensive, which always comes as a surprise to me and part of this (along with the simple quality of their food) is the reason why we always get our deli trays from Barry's New Style Deli. In the past, we've had a meat tray and the thing was just as oversized as many of their meals. They do catering and for Jewish holidays and other events they are always incredibly busy. They have other trays as well, one of which is loaded with creamed herring, which to me at least, is something of an acquired taste. From what I've been told, however, these tray sell like hotcakes and since they're portioned by the number of people, you can be sure to get a ton of food.
Although I have never been to the North Market in the morning to try the breakfast at Barry's New York Style Deli, I have heard that it's very cheap and quick. Barry's has lox and cheap fresh bagels and if you're looking to find coffee, there's no shortage of that in neighboring booths at the North Market. This truly is a lunch spot and the reason they've been around so long is because of their quality; for the prices and sizes you can't beat Barry's.
