Review of Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy Triple Chocolate Fudge Chip Frosting

Clever Shopper
My husband decided to make a chocolate cake this weekend, and since he doesn't like making frosting, he also purchased a 15.5 ounce container of Betty Crocker Rich & Creamy Triple Chocolate Fudge Chip Frosting. I was a bit skeptical, thinking that there is no way a prepared frosting would taste as good as homemade, but I was pleasantly surprised at how great this frosting tasted.

How To Use

This frosting comes in a plastic container, and should be stored at room temperature. Once the cake is cooled, using this product is as easy as removing the plastic lid, tearing off the seal, and spreading the frosting on your cake. One container is barely enough to frost a 9" x 12" cake pan.

Ingredients

Sugar, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oil, water, cocoa processed with alkali, high maltose corn syrup, milk chocolate chips, semisweet chocolate chips, wheat starch, corn starch, salt, distilled monoglycerides, polysorbate 60, modified cellulose, sodium stearoyl lactylate, natural and artificial flavor, freshness preserved by potassium sorbate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, citric acid. Contains milk, soy and wheat ingredients.

Thoughts

My husband didn't care for this chocolate frosting because he wasn't aware when he purchased it that it contained tiny chocolate chips. I thought it was great. He frosted his cake while it was still warm, and those small pieces of chocolate melted enough to give the topping a fudge like consistency, with great chocolate flavor. It's a thick and creamy frosting, that looks like homemade. If you wanted a thinner frosting, you could easily whip in some milk - and if you wanted to cut the richness of the chocolate you could easily mix in a bit of powdered sugar. In any case, if you needed to stretch this to make a little more frosting, you could quickly do so.

Obviously, this is full of fat and calories. But if you are concerned about such things, you probably aren't going to be eating frosted cake in the first place.

I well remember my daughter waiting until the night before to tell me that she needed to take cupcakes to school the next day! I'm sure something similar has happened to you. For those times, it's great to have a cake mix and container of Betty Crocker frosting at the ready. Cupcakes could be made and frosted in an hour. Sure beats trying to make something from scratch! (And nobody will know you didn't make it yourself).

Betty Crocker frosting is so easy to use, and it will cover one 13" x 9" cake, two 8" layer cakes, or up to 32 cupcakes. If you have any leftover frosting, you can put it in the fridge for 30 days, and my daycare children enjoy frosting their graham crackers with it. Since it's so sugary, we don't do this very often, but it does make an occasional fun treat.

Betty Crocker guarantees that their frostings will have a great rich, creamy delicious homemade taste every time, so you really have nothing to lose! Give it a try the next time your sweet tooth gets a craving for a homemade cake!

My husband threw the container in the garbage, but I dug it out and am running it through my dishwasher. It would make a great little container for leftovers, for holding crafts supplies, or other small items.

Retail price: $2.29, and it has the Box Tops for Education labels.
