Review: Biokleen Bac-Out Stain and Odor Eliminator

Drew Taylor
A sale on cleaners prompted me to try Biokleen Bac-Out Stain and Odor Eliminator. The label boasts a concentrated non-toxic, biodegradable formula that is free of artificial fragrances and preservatives.

Bac-Out's lime peel extract and enzyme-producing cultures are supposed to "attack pet, food and beverage stains, organic waste and odors until they are gone."

Pet Accidents on Carpet
Dealing with a cat that periodically marks his territory is a challenge. (A variety of remedies, including neutering, did not eliminate this behavior.) Homemade cleaning solutions helped a bit, but so-called pet odor removers simply created a new unpleasant carpet odor.

Bac-Out worked surprisingly well in neutralizing strong pet odors. For accidents on the carpet, I blotted the area well with a towel then doused it with full-strength Bac-Out. After about 5 minutes, I blotted it with another towel and let the spot air dry. The pungent odor was no longer noticeable by the time the carpet dried.

General Odors
Although Biokleen sells a separate spray fabric refresher product, I have never tried it. Instead, I mixed the Bac-Out with cold water in a spray bottle.

I used it as a general air freshener and fabric refresher. It started out with a fruity lime scent, but the fragrance quickly dissipated, taking odors along with it.

Full-strength Bac-Out also did a good job deodorizing the garbage disposal and drains.

Laundry Use

I did not try it as a laundry stain remover.

Value

At $10 for 32-ounce bottle and approximately $25 for a 128-ounce bottle, the price for Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator rivals the cost of pet stain cleaners.

For my purposes, it is a good value because it effectively neutralized tough odors better than comparably priced products.

Room for Improvement
The label included a few specific usage options, but the other directions are vague and do not give a good view of this product's many uses. The Biokleen website has instructions for making a general deodorizing solution, but that info, 1/4 cup Bac-Out to 1 gallon water, should be on the label as well.

This concentrated Biokleen product has a thin consistency and most of the label applications indicate to use it full strength. Perhaps heavy duty is a better description than concentrated since concentrated cleaners typically yield multiple solutions.

When rinsing the blotting towels, I noticed some suds. This could potentially be a problem if using the Bac-Out as a laundry stain remover in a high-efficiency washing machine. The label should advise one way or the other since HE washers are common.

Final Review
Biokleen Bac-Out Stain & Odor Eliminator is a staple among my household cleaners.
