Black Country Communion rocked the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. on Sunday June 19, 2011. Fans were anticipating a special show. A super group consisting of top notch blues guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa, former Deep Purple vocalist and bass player Glenn Hughes, the drums of Jason Bonham, and the keyboard talents of Derek Sherinian wrapping up a short eight city U.S. Tour would have fans anticipating something special.
The band kicked off their show with "Black Country" followed by their first single "One Last Soul" from their debut album. Black Country Communion blasted through songs from their first album and their recent release 2. They did perform two covers, a Joe Bonamassa song "The Ballad of John Henry" and they ended their encore with Deep Purple's "Burn." The covers were justified with Joe and Glenn fronting the band.
Led Zeppelin covers were not played but there were teases thrown in. A nod to Jason's back ground. The Theremin, the double neck guitar, was played as well. However, the band uses the British rock influences to create something new and the tools to explore new ground. Derek was highlighted on a few extended solos.
Glenn Hughes led the band in energy and enthusiasm. He links the band to the classic British hard rock and adds a bit of authenticity to Black Country Communion. "Burn" fit in perfectly with the bands sound. It was also a nice treat for Glenn's fans and his Deep Purple followers.
Joe Bonamassa's own song was something for his fans. Joe's blues roots compliment the British rock influences perfectly. Bonamassa was able to explore a whole toy box of toys, playing the Les Paul, the SG, the Explorer, the Double Neck, and the Theremin during the set.
Derek Sheridian shined on the keyboards. The former member of Dream Theater and a keyboardist who has played with a rock and roll who's who list of stars showed his keyboard mastery.
Jason Bonham is more than the son of a rock and roll legend. He is a talented power house drummer having toured with Jimmy Page and Foreigner. He has filled the drum chair of his Father and has quite the resume. Jason drives the powerful beat of the Black Country Communion.
Black Country Communion is a straight ahead rock band that did not disappoint fans. The band left the fans wanting more. Fans have a lot to look forward to as Glenn Hughes stated the BCC was "building a foundation." The Black Country Communion foundation will only get better as the band continues to gel as a unit and produce even more music.
