Review of Blinc Mascara -- Forms Tubes Around Eyelashes

Tara M. Clapper
After dealing with a two-day long migraine induced by makeup, I posted a status update on Facebook complaining about the risk of migraine that occurs every time I wear mascara. A friend immediately recommended Blinc Mascara, explaining that this no-smear makeup forms tubes around the mascara to prevent the clump and flaking experienced in traditional mascaras.

Formerly known as 'Kiss Me,' this makeup generally lives up to the manufacturer's claims.

How it Works

Blinc Mascara forms little 'tubes' around your individual eyelashes. Instead of coating your lashes with paint, the tubes simply surround them. They're soft to the touch and very natural looking once the application process is complete.

The tubes form an acrylic; its main ingredient is an acrylic copolymer.

Application

When applied, Blinc Mascara initially feels just like regular mascara, so I was skeptical at first. Once it sets (it takes about a minute), the mascara feels much less weighty than normal mascara, even after two coats.

After the initial minute, the individual lashes actually separate. This was a pleasant surprise since I thought my lashes looked pretty clumpy after my first application.

If you get any Blinc Mascara on your skin or over-apply, a damp tissue removes it without the smearing effect you get with regular mascara (just make sure your lashes dry before you reapply).

If you blink, some of the mascara may stick to your skin before it dries, but this minor drawback is acceptable considering the other benefits of the mascara.

Comfort Level

Blinc Mascara is fairly comfortable. With traditional mascara, I experience migraines, irritation (when wearing contacts), smudging (when wearing glasses) and constant worry over my appearance. I'm always wondering if the makeup smeared.

Blinc Mascara doesn't smear, smudge or irritate my eyes during application, wear or removal. While I still feel aware of the makeup, I don't have to stress over it.

Removal

Removing the tubes takes me a minute or two, and it's best done in the shower. To remove the tubes, just wet a washcloth with warm water and dab it along your lashes. Take your fingers and peel the tubes off.

The tubes look like little pieces of black rubber when they come off. I do find it a bit challenging to remove the tubes from the lower lashes.

Make sure you wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap before you remove the tubes. I ended up touching my eyeball a few times (which doesn't bother me since I wear contacts). You may also wish to avoid using astringents or lotions before you remove the tubes in case your finger goes in your eye-such substances can cause additional irritation.

I was afraid of pulling out eyelashes by accident, but I didn't lose a single lash when I pulled off the tubes. If they're resistant, just add a bit more warm water.

Price Point

This stuff is pricey. It's $25 per product, though the cost does include shipping if you live in the US. I decided to spend the money on this product primarily because I had not found a solution for my mascara-induced migraines. However, this product is not made of the same materials as traditional mascara. Therefore, the shelf life is longer-it's not prone to bacteria contamination in the same way as traditional mascara.

Since Blinc is a specialty product, you must order it online.

This is an additional bonus for me since I usually work at home and don't wear mascara most days. Looking at costs, I was spending at least as much since I had to purchase a new tube of traditional mascara every other time I needed to wear it, completely wasting most of the bottle and risking a migraine.

Each tube contains 0.21 ounces of mascara. It's packaged in a regular mascara tube that is stored inside an outer tin container with a screw-on cap.

Blinc's website offers detailed information and training videos regarding the mascara and other Blinc products. Blinc products are also gluten-free and vegan. The product is not and was not tested on animals. Blinc is available in multiple shades including green and purple.

So far, I've only worn Blinc in professional situations. I haven't yet worn it in the pool or to the gym. Blinc claims that their mascara does hold up in almost any daily situation. The mascara is waterproof and to remove the tubes, you must actually pull them after they are wet.

If you don't currently experience eye irritation problems or if you wear a mascara product frequently enough that expiration isn't an issue, you may not need Blinc-but it's a worthwhile luxury. If you experience eye irritation, running, flaking or generally dislike wearing mascara, Blinc is a necessity.
