Review of Blue Bunny Premium Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate Ice Cream

Brad Kamer

This past week we were treated to two containers of Blue Bunny ice cream. It has been ages since I have had any Blue bunny product as I typically associate this brand to some really stellar ice cream sandwiches and drum sticks. The two flavors of ice cream we received were Premium Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate and Butter Pecan. The latter, I plan to review at another time as this critique covers only the cherry variety. It has probably been a good twenty plus years since I have had a cherry based ice cream.

Description

The ice cream is sold in 1.75 quart containers that have a top tear off safety seal. The container is not perfectly rectangular like most ice cream containers, but has rounded edges giving this kind of a fun shape. Once the safety seal is removed, one simply lifts off the lid to get access to the ice cream. The ice cream is delicate shade of pink with dark specks that are either chocolate bits or chunks of dark cherry. It is very difficult to the naked eye to determine which black sliver is dark chocolate or cherry.

Taste

The first taste of this ice cream was an immediate dose of deliciousness before things went awry. The first spoonful of this ice cream offered a very creamy cherry flavored dessert that had some good hearty dark chocolate bits that blended well together. The second and third bites were not nearly as euphoric as I bit into very large chunks of cherry bits or skins. I am usually okay with cherry bits in ice cream if they are relatively small and not combined with chocolate chunks. Getting through this dessert was tough as I was biting into lots of cherry skins thinking I would be getting chocolate. Blue bunny -- -- .keep the chocolate and tasty cherry based cream; just ditch the cherry skins.

Price

The cost of one 1.75 quart of Blue Bunny Premium Bordeaux Cherry Chocolate ice cream runs about $3.99 (without tax) at the local Jewel food store. In my opinion, this is a very fair price considering most ice cream runs between $2.75 and $5.00 per carton of this size.

Overall Satisfaction

While I had no problems finishing off my three scoops of this ice cream, I am inclined to give this dessert only average marks at best. I like cherries and I love chocolate, but these ingredients mixed together in a "chunky" format sort of killed the pleasure for me. I give this one three out of five forks -- -- -- or shall we say spoons.
