REVIEW - Boca Meatless Breakfast Wraps, Southwestern Flavor

I'm the kind of person who does not want to cook a big meal in the morning, but I definitely require something substantial to eat. Otherwise I get very cranky! I also am not a meat-eater, so bacon and sausage are off limits to me. However, faux meat is perfectly fair game. Thus, I decided to try Boca Meatless Breakfast Wraps, Southwestern flavor. They are soy protein sausage, egg white and cheese wraps. Two come in a box and they cost about $2.49 at the local grocery store.

Preparation is simple. You take the frozen wrap out of the box, open one end of the plastic wrapper, place it on a paper towel and microwave it with the seam side of the wrapper facing down for two minutes and five seconds. (Two and a half minutes if you have a small or compact microwave.) The steaming hot wrap is meant to cool in the microwave for two minutes after cooking and then it is ready to eat.

My first experience with the wrap was acceptable but somewhat disappointing. The whole wheat wrap at the end of the wrap became somewhat overly crispy and hard. The inside was a mélange of mild flavors and no distinct taste was readily discernable. I could vaguely see the eggs, Boca sausage and peppers, but individual flavors were not apparent. I could not taste any distinct cheese flavor either. Salt was necessary. I suppose if someone was very hungry and nothing else is available, these are a good choice, but to be really great, they need more taste!

My second experience with the wrap was somewhat better as I ate a little bit of fresh salsa with it. The tangy salsa mixed with the mild flavor of the wrap was the perfect combination and did not add much more in the way of calories or fat. The edge of the wrap was still hard though, so perhaps next time I might microwave the wrap for slightly less than two minutes. Being vegetarian is tough, as there are a lot of meat substitutes in the marketplace, some better than others. Boca makes great veggie burgers but I think they need to work on this recipe a bit more to make it a stellar freezer selection.

Health wise, these wraps are not a bad choice. They have seven grams of fat, and 200 calories and enough protein (14 grams) to get your day started right. Verdict: For a quick bite to eat for vegetarians, these wraps are economical and healthy - unfortunately, they are not strong on flavor or taste. With a little tweaking though, these wraps can be a quick, easy and hearty meal with southwestern flair to get your morning (or evening) started off with a kick
