Review of Broken Rock Falls

Old Mans Cave in Hocking Hills State Park

Chen Salis
Old Mans Cave is a part of the Hocking Hills State Park. Old Mans Cave is located outside of Logan Ohio via State Route 664 South. The drive to Old Mans Cave is scenic and beautiful. You will arrive at Old Mans Cave in just a few minutes after leaving the city of Logan.

The Hocking Hills State Park is one of the best outdoor adventure destinations Ohio has to offer. Over ten thousand public hiking trails await your discovery here. At Old Mans Cave you will find a variety of trails, and the degree of difficulty varies. Old Mans Cave is by far the most visited park in Hocking County. The park is absolutely breath taking. It is beautifully preserved and if you look very close you can see what has changed here. This park has been open for around one hundred years, and appeals to young energetic people, as well as older folks who used to come here in their younger days. In a sense Old Mans Cave is like a trip down memory road for some visitors of the park.

I especially enjoy coming here, as Old Mans Cave is an important part of my family's history. When my grandma was a young lady in the 1930's, she came here for outdoor adventure and beauty. In those days you could walk in very dangerous areas. On one trip to Old Mans Cave my grandma, was at the top of the sphinx head, an old lady fell from this treacherous ledge. My grandma looked out over the edge and saw the old lady lying down below, a broken and bloody mess. My grandma got dizzy, and before she knew it, she had also fallen from this edge.

Luckily my grandma was wearing high heels and God was looking out for her. Her high heels stuck in the ground as she was falling. She landed standing straight up, with her heels stuck into the ground. My grandma survived, no broken bones or injuries. She was just shaken up a little. My grandma was the strongest woman I ever knew. All 100 pounds of her. I love this story because it shows how strong and determined she was to live. My grandma was blessed to survive this fall.

Yesterday I took a trip out to Old Mans Cave and enjoyed a lovely hike. On weekdays in the off-season Old Mans Cave is virtually deserted. The weekends however, are another story. I hiked up and down stairs, I marveled at the devils bathtub and both the upper and lower falls. My companion is far more adventurous than I am. He insisted we finish out our hike via the Broken Rock Falls trail.

This trail is seldom used and somewhat unknown. The steps that lead up to Broken Rock falls are worn and dangerous, you must climb over a haphazardly fallen tree, and then you must climb over a lot of moss-covered rocks or climb up a ledge. It is easy to understand why so few people come this way. It is really the hardest hike I have ever made. If you are sure footed and adventurous you might want to visit Broken Rock falls, it is still on most maps available of Old Mans Cave. I would not recommend taking elderly people, small children or anyone who is extremely out of shape on this trail.
