My wife and I had a weekend off together and, for once, didn't have a whole lot of plans. Because of that, I wanted to be sure to have a nice, family breakfast this past Sunday. We had to run to Wal-mart Saturday night (we were doing some Christmas shopping for the kids) so, while we were there, I went over to the grocery section to pick up some eggs and bacon.
I ended up buying Butterball Fully Cooked Turkey Bacon.
To be perfectly honest with you, this was not a purchase I intended on making. I know turkey is supposed to be healthier for me but, when it comes to bacon, I'm much more traditional and don't normally even consider it if it isn't made from pork. However, after spending nearly $200 already, I was trying not to spend too much more and this product was considerably less expensive than the other brands so I reluctantly decided to give it a try.
And, I'm going to be perfectly honest with you; I had a lot of doubts about this even as I was cooking it. This is because, when I opened the box, I couldn't help but notice it didn't even look like bacon. As I mentioned to my wife, it looked more like those fake bacon treats you can buy for dogs and I jokingly told her we were having dog food.
But, after trying this bacon, I have to admit, I was very impressed.
First of all, even though it didn't look like regular bacon, it did taste like it. When I first took a bite of this, I thought for sure I would feel like I was eating a piece of turkey. But, there wasn't much difference in flavor between this and a piece of bacon made from pork.
In fact, there were some things I liked better about this, including the fact it wasn't as salty as regular bacon (something my wife made note of too) and there wasn't nearly as much grease from it. In other words, it probably was healthier for me and I didn't have to sacrifice the taste.
I might have been reluctant to buy this and had some doubts about it until I tried it. But, I do think this is a product that is worth trying if you haven't gotten a chance. I don't know for sure if I would buy it on a regular basis. But, I do know I would eat it again.
