There are several different types of calcium found in calcium supplements. Most common are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. All people absorb calcium citrate a bit better, though most absorb calcium carbonate well enough. People need a fair amount of stomach acid to absorb calcium carbonate, though, so those that have reduced stomach acid, such as people that have had bariatric surgery, older people and those taking antacid medications, should stick to calcium citrate.
Calcium citrate pills meant to be swallowed are usually pretty large and you may need to take several a day. One common brand contains 315 mg calcium citrate per large tablet and you might need to take three or four of those every day. People that have trouble swallowing big pills may prefer chewable calcium supplements.
Calcet Creamy Calcium Bites are wonderful chewable calcium citrate supplements. Each individually packaged square contains 500 mg calcium citrate along with 400 IU vitamin D3. Good levels of vitamin D3 are necessary in order to absorb calcium well. They come in two delicious flavors, including chocolate fudge and lemon cream. I personally prefer the lemon, but enjoy them both.
It's important to realize these supplements contain 40 calories and three grams of sugar per piece, so if you really need to limit your calories or your sugar intake, they may not be the best choice for you.
They are also costly, in my opinion; Celebrate Vitamins charges $12.99 for a box of 30. Due to the price, I don't use them for all my calcium needs. I need 1500 mg calcium citrate daily because I had gastric bypass surgery. I use Calcet Creamy Calcium Bites for some of my calcium needs but use other, more affordable, supplements sometimes too.
Calcet Creamy Calcium Bites are made by Celebrate Vitamins, a company that markets vitamin and mineral supplements to bariatric surgery patients. However, anyone can order from Celebrate Vitamins and their calcium citrate supplements are suitable for everyone, not only bariatric surgery patients. I like ordering from Celebrate Vitamins because they have excellent customer service. They will send you free samples if you email them or call them and ask. I highly recommend you give these a try.
