Review: California Pizza Kitchen Frozen Margherita Pizza

Drew Taylor
Some frozen pizza manufacturers seem to think bigger is better as they make bigger pizza crusts and add heaps of toppings. The pizza looks delicious, but too often, the result is a calorie-laden pizza that fails to impress. California Pizza Kitchen's frozen Margherita pizza is a refreshing alternative to heavy, greasy pizzas.

California Pizza Kitchen Frozen Margherita Pizza Overview
Taste: Delicious and light with a thin, crisp crust.
Price and Availability: $4.99* Available nationwide in grocer's frozen food section.
Add to Shopping List: Yes.

Cook Time
The thin crust means this pizza cooks much faster than most frozen pizzas. Cooking takes approximately twelve minutes at 400° F.

Margherita Taste and Appearance
Even though it had more basil than shown on the pizza box, the pizza looked a bit bare prior to cooking. Margherita pizza has a drizzle of olive instead of tomato sauce and the mozzarella cheese and tomatoes dotted across the crust did not look very promising.

During cooking, the mozzarella cheese spread to cover the pizza. This simple pizza is tastier than pizzas piled high with sauce and toppings. The basil and parmesan cheese add flavor without overpowering the other ingredients. Instead of being soggy or tasting canned, the tomatoes are soft and flavorful.

California Pizza Kitchen Nutrition Content
According to the product label, this pizza serves three. Each serving has 300 calories, 120 calories from fat, 13 grams fat, 5 grams saturated fat, 1 gram trans fat, 20 milligrams cholesterol, 520 milligrams salt, 33 grams total carbohydrate, 2 grams dietary fiber, 3 grams sugar and 14 grams protein.

Frozen Margherita Price and Availability
California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizzas are available in the frozen food department of most grocers such as Kroger and Walmart. The bright yellow boxes are easy to spot.

Room for Improvement
The label indicates the pizza serves three. However, the thin crust and modest toppings make this pizza less filling than traditional pizza. It works well as an accompaniment to salad and pasta, but not as an entree.

The Last Slice
The price is on par with other frozen pizzas, but the quantity is a little lighter. I will purchase this product again, but not in cases where I need to feed a crowd.

*Prices sometimes vary across the country.

Good to know! I'm a big fan of lighter, less laden pizzas; if I see this in the frozen foods section, I'll definitely give it a try. :)
