Camping for Summerfest Saves Money and Extends Enjoyment
Milwaukee, WI 53201
United States of America
Summerfest, the World's Largest Music Festival has a 23,000 seat main amphitheater which will open with Tim McGraw. Other stars on this stage will include Carrie Underwood. There are ten additional stages which in the past have brought the stars and emerging stars of rock, blues, hip hop, and country to Milwaukee all for this eleven-day event.
Camping can increase your fun during your stay in Milwaukee. You will also save money over the cost of a hotel room.
There are several campgrounds in the Milwaukee area. These campgrounds can accommodate the RV camper to the rustic backwoods tent enthusiasts. One caution is to make early reservations since they do fill up as the hotel and motel room do during this annual event.
The closest campground is for RV's and can be found at the State Fair Park. This is an RV park within the city and has 70 full service hook ups, toilets, and showers. Don't expect scenic sites you will be next to a highway but the campground is very clean, has a friendly staff and the location cannot be beat. The Wisconsin State Fair RV Park is located off interstate 90 at the 84th street exit, follow the signs, through the state park entrance. Reservations only. Call 414-266-7035.
There are three state campgrounds within easy driving distance to the Summerfest grounds. Each of them will require you to have a state park admission permit which can be purchased either on-line or at the office when registering. All campground reservations for Wisconsin State Parks must be made through ReserveAmerica.Com
The first state facility is Bong Recreation Area which is located about forty miles south of Milwaukee. There are two campgrounds with 217 camp sites. Forty-five of them have electricity. There are flush toilets and showers. Bong was developed on an area designated for an Air force base so there are few trees today. It does offer beautiful prairies and a variety of recreational opportunities from hot air ballooning to swimming.
Second is the Southern Kettle Moraine area. You will find almost three hundred camp sites here from the very rustic in the Pinewoods and Whitewater campgrounds to the modern electric sites offered at Ottawa lakes. The Souther Kettle Moraine is famous for their mountain bike trails and miles of hiking trails. This area is about thirty-five miles west of Milwaukee on Interstate 90.
The third and closest state campground is Pike Lake. This thirty-two-site campground is located a short 22 miles north of Milwaukee. There are eleven electric sites and one disability site along with flush toilets and showers. This campground is kept impeccably clean as is the park. The sites offer a choice between wooded and sunny and all are fairly large. There is swimming, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and other recreational opportunities available within the park.
There are several private campgrounds in the area. The first is Country View in Mukwonago, WI, (262) 662-3654. This park offers one hundred and fifty-nine sites however be aware that most are full time rentals. The toilet and shower facilities are not very good. This park appears to cater to cater to long term leases and not overnight campers.
The second is Lazy Days Campground in West Bend, (262) a 675-6511.This campground is about thirty miles north of Milwaukee. This park also caters to the long term campers but they also offer a nice camping area for overnight campers. Do not expect to be on the lake but you will have a larger level site with shade, picnic table, and fire ring.
One other option for camping during Summerfest, 2010 is to rent a camper and have it set up for you at one of these campgrounds. Many area rental agencies have this service. This would allow you to fly into Milwaukee's Mitchell Field, rent a car. Or many people ride their Harley's into Milwaukee, the home of Harley Davidson to attend the Summerfest Music Festival. You can arrange for a rental and set up of an RV through GETRV.COM.
The Milwaukee Summerfest Music Festival is an unforgettable experience. Combining camping with your Summerfest fun is one way to extend your enjoyment while saving a few dollars over the hotel costs.
